2010 Dewatto Buck
« on: December 24, 2010, 11:18:14 AM »
This is my second post, so bear with me...
I had just gotten laid off from work, and my birthday was on October 28th, so I decided to go hunting. I hiked in past a locked gate to an area I wanted to rattle. I set up on the edge of a clearcut near a 10acre island of timber. Second setup and I caught a small forken horn sneaking away. I let him go and kept moving. I decided to get on an old road grade that led through the island of timber. I moved too fast through the timber and blew a deer off the grade (it was probably a monster buck). I kept sneaking through the timber and decided to hunt my way back to the truck.
On the way out, I came back to a huge clearcut, close to the main road. I immediately noticed a bunch of really fresh rubs. I decided to walk out a spur in the middle of the clearcut. As I reached the end of the spur this buck gets up and starts hauling ass to try and make it to the nearest tree line. I saw he was a good buck, so I layed down and rested my rifle on a piece of firewood. I missed him on the first shot and hit him on the second. About a 150 yard shot on the run. I hit him in the back left leg and the bullet went all the way through him and out the front right shoulder. He still managed to run/crawl another 75 yards away with 2 shattered legs.
He was bedded with a doe and a small spike. The coolest part of the day was when I was boning him out. I was about 150 yards from the edge of the timber, in the middle of a clearcut. I hear some sticks breaking, and I look towards the treeline. I see a couple deer staring at me. I think to myself "that cant be a buck". I dig out my binoculars from my pack and glass them and it was a doe being chased by a pretty nice forken horn.
Pretty cool, seen 4 bucks that morning. I hope attaching the pics works...
And I notched and attached my tag after pics...

Nice buck.  I like the color of his horns and his mass.

From the quote above, I take it you're from Oregon?

No. My hunting partner is from Oregon, and this is what he calls them. I guess it wore off on me.
