Cougar in my back yard. Help me get him
« on: December 24, 2010, 12:58:36 PM »
I was told there was a cougar sighting out back of my housing complex.  Out there is Green Diamond land so it's huntable.  Now, I need your help in getting him.

Is one time of day better than others or are they all day animals?

The only calls I have are a doe in estrus, cow/calf elk and a cottontail in distress.  Which one to use?  There are no elk around this area.

How often to call?  every 15 minutes?  once an hour?

Anything else you guys can help with?

I think dusk and dawn are its more active hunting times, since you can't go after them at night.  I think the call to try should be representative of the game in the area.  They seem to like to approach from uphill and downwind (if possible)...uphill because it is easier to pounce down.  If possible look for a farm near the border of the area you are hunting, preferably one with small animals or one that has a pasture that attracts deer/elk.  You may be able to find one stalking around the edges.  Other things you can do are to go look for its cache and wait for it to return or look for its 'sleepy hole'.  I found one this year that was a large hole in a rock (but not a cave), and had elk parts and scat all about.  Can you set up any trail cams?

The way I read the rules, since there is no deer or elk modern season going on right now, in my GMU 633, I can hunt cougar with any weapon and not need orange?  I can rifle hunt without orange, correct?
