Alabama Hogs.
« on: December 27, 2010, 02:51:22 PM »
Set up a trail cam on what I thought was a buck scrape.  Boy was I wrong.  It's a hog scrape.

Here's two sows that came by.

Here's another sow.  Might be the same one as before.

Here's the boar that followed a couple of hours later.

Here's the trail that leads to the first spot.  Its the boar again.

I would love to shoot one but right now I'm concentrating on deer.  Plus right now all my pics are at night so I havn't found them during day light hours yet.  Hunting in Alabama is extremely difficult.  Not physically but finding a deer is tough.  I will never ever talk smack about guys who hunt out East again.  Western hunting is WAY WAY easier.

Where are you hunting in Alabama?  Private Land?  Public Land and how many acres?  Hunting in the South is a lot different than hunting in the PNW.

Oh.. I don't know about that. I only know one eastern hunter that has been successful hunting out here. I've known several successful hunters from back east, (Navy comrads stationed here), that had poor luck hunting Blacktail.

Michelle I am hunting on Ft. Rucker so its public. But I'm hunting in a bow only portion so I basically have it to myself. In Area 35 where I hunt it goes from super thick creek bottoms to hard woods then at the tops its planted pines. There's also two food plots (which I don't hunt). Yeah South East Alabama hunting is way way different. The pre-rut hasn't even started yet. The deer are about 95% nocturnal and since the terrain is so flat its hard to find the funnels. But I think I've about figured where to set up.

During the bowseason it was nice because deer did come out to the food plots during the day. But as soon as gun season started they went nocturnal.

The Pre Rut hasn't started yet?  Are you sure about that?  I lived in GA for 5 years and there main rut down there was before Thanksgiving.  I can't imagine the rut is diferent by 2 months.

They let any Civillian hunt of Ft. Rucker?  or are you talking military and Civillian employees?

Your best bet is to find trails leading into and out of the food plots.

Yeah all you need to hunt Ft. Rucker is your hunters education card.  Then buy a Alabama license and a Ft. Rucker permit and you get a hunting license and a big game (turkey deer).  On the big game license is  a spot for 3 bucks and 5 turkeys where you write the date you shot the buck or turkey.  You don't do anything with does.

Yeah I know its weird but the pre-rut hasn't started yet.  The Game Wardens said that the rut in the area runs from about Jan 15-Jan 30th.

Carpsniper I'm pretty excited about February.  My dad is coming down for two weeks and we're gonna be hog hunting with the smoke poles.  Should be a great time.

Michelle I am pretty sure that the rut is starting to hit finally here.  The bucks are finally starting to chase.  I have seen 3 bucks in the last two times out all during the day just "roaming."  Unfortunately none were close enough for me to attempt a shot with my bow.  One was but wouldn't stop.  Finally.  I am stoked.  I've got two weekends left to hunt for deer and three tags to fill.  Then after Jan 31st its all about the hogs.  And I have a very good feeling I'll be posting some pics of some Bama hogs for you all.
