Anyone know this species of owl?

OK cool thanks.  For all intents and purposes this one I'm referring to looks like just miniature of what we used to refer to as a "barn owl" back home.  Just mini sized.  Oh yeah, he's also vocal as hell at times.

That would be the Borreal.  They have the "barn" owl face compared to the screech.

Saw whet is just barely larger than the pygmy.  Has dark eyes instead of yellow, little white streaks on brown on top of its head, brown instead of gray.  likes open conifers and mixed forests, heavier canopy than where I usually see the pygmy.  Name comes from it's call, which reminded people of the sound of sharpening a crosscut saw with a whetstone.

pic of a saw whet we rescued during elk season, found it in the middle of the road we think it was hit by a vehicle, it was not able to open one eye. We contacted WDFW who got us in contact with a lady in Kennewick who in turn took it to Pendlton, they rehabilitated the owl and released it where we found it.

Great job!  However, that is a really nice gray phase screech owl.  No ear tufts on the saw whet!

Thanks doublelung, we did not know what it was and took the woman's word for it.

Sitting out on my front porch right now and there is a screech owl out here working.   Noisey little buggers

That's funny, I was just down at the barn feeding the cows while listening to 2 hooty owls about 200 yards apart.
