Wolf gunpowder in 7.62X54 or 7.62X39?
« on: December 30, 2010, 04:47:56 PM »
Does anyone know where I can find out about the powder that Wolf uses to charge its 7.62X54 bullets? I’m looking for standard ballistics properties, burn rates, etc. similar to what you would find on hand loading powders. I removed about 8 oz. of powder from a bunch of Wolf 7.62X54 bullets that I’m not going to use. If I knew some of the specifics I could use it to reload new bullets in new reloadable brass. Is there any danger in doing this? BTW, the powder in the Wolf 7.62X39 looks identical. Does anyone know if it’s the same? It seems like a waste of good gunpowder just to throw it out.

No idea on the powder, judging by smell it's made from purified camel *censored*. Why did you pull the bullets in the first place?
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

I think there will be almost unanimous opinion that it is not worth the money or time for 8 oz of powder ($15 max) to work up all the information you would need to safely characterize the powder and then develop loads with it.  Companies spend big dollars doing this same thing to ensure safe and reliable data is obtained.

The only way I would reuse it is if I just put it back in the case it came out of with the same bullet that you pulled. Even changing the bullet and seating parameters, crimp, etc. can effect pressures for which you are probably ill-equipped (equipment wise) to assess the risk.

Yes, it can be done. But you will be wasting your time and possibly ending up risking a firearm and personal safety.

The common answer for waste powder is to dump it in your lawn or garden as it is a good source of nitorgen.

Unanimous is a powerful opinion. I'm tossing it. I'd still like to known though. I doubt that Wolf will give up its chemical formula. Another question for you guys: why is factory ammo so much finer grain than the reloading powders we buy over the counter.

My guess is that it meters more consistently on high volume machinery than the coarse ones, similar to the differences we see between stick and ball powders.
