First full day of calling with success...sort of. Pic heavy

Went out today for my first full day of calling.  Didnt have any luck calling bobcats or coyotes but had a great day in the woods.

First light on the way in.


Did one stand below the snow line and one in a large clearcut (which I never have luck with).  Then things started looking up. 
Bobcat on the hunt for bunnies.  Must have just missed each other.  


Predator super highway.  Bobcat tracks on the far right, the rest are coyote.  Well they all look like coyote except the really dark tracks.  They look like old canine tracks but the stride doesnt look like normal coyote to me and they show a lot of heel.  Any ideas?


Looks like a popular place.  Cat, dog, deer and some looser.  


The rest of my stands were all in prime areas but didnt have any takers.

Was into deer all day long.  They all wanted to play peek a boo even though they were not spooky at all.  They must know season just ended.

Just saw an ear flick on this one.


This one I was very close to, maybe 20 yards.  Every time I would tell her how pretty she is she would lick her shoulder and strut around.  A little diva for sure.


The little one is shy (do you see it?) but mom stood in the road at let me walk to within 50 yards of her before she walked off.  Definitely knows season is over.  Love seeing does with white neck patches.


Shortly after the last pic I went around the corner and saw movement way up a hill side.  Looky there, its mister porky.  First blood for the R-15.  The porky dropped when I shot it so I left the rifle at the bottom of the hill and went up to get him.  Well when I got up there he was still alive so I grabbed a branch and finished the job.  


The club complete with embedded quills.


About 25 pounds.  I shot him about 2 miles in and wanted to try some porcupine stew so I started cleaning him up.  By the time I got him skinned and gutted it was way past time to head out.  Packed the skin and carcass out in that dark.  Which sucked!!!


All in all a great day despite failure to call anything in on multiple stands. I saw loads of cats and dog tracks and even though the area is loaded with predators I did see a lot of fawns which is awesome.

Porkie is awesome eating.  Cook like rabbit.  They are definitely a pain to skin.     25 pounds is a darn big one.

Porcupines are all over the place.  They are unclassified wildlife so can be hunted all year long.

I kept the skin.  I left the feet attached and case skinned it (which is not easy with all those quills.  Michelle said she wanted to rug one out so I was going to offer it to her if she wants it.  If not there was a post where someone was buying porcupine skins.

25 pounds is totally guessing.  I thought my bobcat last year was 25lbs and it turned to only be 19.  By the time I got it to the truck it felt like 150 though.

Yes the P Pines are everywhere. I live in Nine Mile Falls about 15 miles from Spokane and we have them running around here right along with the coons.

I dont think I have ever heard a bobcat or coyote coming in.  They are pretty quite.  If they get close enough you will feel them breathing on your neck.

Porcupine stew is cooking.  Will be done in 2 hours.  I will let you know how it turns out but it smells great so far.

I was always told that you shouldn't kill a porcupine unless you absolutely had to because in a survival situation, they are one of the easiest animals to kill with a rock or club...

But nice job anyways. We got a sweet skinned porcupine at a yardsale about 10 years ago. They look really cool as a rug type mount.

I've killed a lot of porkies- but I never knew anyone that skinned them. There was a topic here about eating them but that just doesn't sound good to me.

I've heard that what a lot of times I thought was bear damage it was porkies. We saw a huge one in Kapowsin a while back. It was in the road and we had to chase it out of the way I didn't know you could eat them. Good to know. Looks like fun keep it up.

Well I guess Im not a fan of porcupine.  It has a very unique flavor and a bit of an odor that I am just not liking.  Oh well maybe it was my cooking but it is the same recipe I use for venison and that always turns out good.  Got to try everything once I guess.  Maybe the dogs will like it.

Strange, but then sakoshooter liked coyote and the one I tried was the absolute worst thing I have ever eaten....

I've cooked mine like rabbit, hassenpfeffer sp?, rolled the quarters in flour with some pepper, braised in bacon grease until mostly brown around outside.  Remove, cook chopped onions until just tender, not browned, add meat back in, add equal parts chicken broth and red wine or try mead for a changeup, simmer for about four hours, thicken sauce if desired, serve over rice or noodles.

The biggest problem with porkies is skinning em.

Hey Kain was the snow in good enough condition that you differentiate be tween old & new tracks?
many times in the past I have circled my stand location after calling to find that I did have a predator coming in that I never did see or did not stay on stand long enough.
