could be the stock.  Some people will add weights to the stock to reduce recoil or adjust the balance.  Did you get it used?

Some rifle models are heavier than others. Just like cars. If you share a little more information someone might be able to give you some tips on lightening it up. The stock might be a good place to begin.

yeah.. Most rifles with composite stocks are lighter than ones with wood.

What are the specific models of both rifles you're referencing.

What is the other rifle?  No. Lefties are not generally heavier. But you're not listing what you're comparing...

Take a pickup truck for instance. A Ford F150 4x4 super cab long bed weighs a couple thousand pounds less than an F250 of the same configuration.

So, you've got a Ruger 77 MKII. (there are several models within '77 MKII')  Stainless weighs a bit more than alloy. The standard lefty weighs in at 8 pounds in 270cal. If it's not a current model, you could have a target or varmint heavy barrel that weighs more than a standard taper barrel. At this point you're comparing a cantalope with an apple. There may be justifiable reasons that a rifle is heavier, or balances different. You also don't list what scope is on it. Scopes have a variation of weight across features and brand too.

ruger has a reputation for making really hevy guns. the 25-06 is the heaviest, the 338 is the lightest....same taper, different bore.

Rugers are the M1 Abrams of rifles. If it ever fails.. (doubtful) then, with it, you can beat the livin tar out of what's trying to kill you.  :chuckle:

If it's a rifle you plan on keeping I would invest in a Bell & Carlson medalist stock for it. B&C make a lightweight high quality product, if you buy a $1500 Weatherby ultralight rifle it will come with a B&C medalist stock from the Weatherby factory.  :twocents:
