Mineral Lake 2011
« on: January 03, 2011, 06:50:23 PM »
I am already looking forward to the Mineral Lake opener this spring.  Our group will be making sure we have a spot at the campground for the opener.  Any of you going to make a trip to Mineral this year?

Used to go to Mineral every year for the opener.  Last time was about 8 years ago, there were so many people that it was just wasn't as much fun.  Haven't been back since.  Miss going though, good fishin..

I went once by daylight couldn't even troll or get to the launch. Nver again there is other lakes that have less people and the fishing is just as good. We dont keep any fish under 16" and limit out by 10:00am every year.

I usually wait for the first rainy day after the opener, not as many drunks clogging up the boat ramp in the rain. LOL

Opening day for me ALWAYS is about my kids, I find a Kids Derby to enter them in, fishing for planter trout, no matter how big, is a kick in the pants with children, but dealing with the number of people is a major drawback, my girls like to cast their own rods, and in a crowd it gets pretty messy....

Mineral is a good lake for the opener.  But it seems some people are there to do more drinking than fishing.  I am ready to head home by Sunday afternoon.  We always are ready to go back in the spring.  We had some nice ones last year.

This was floating around town last year.  If Snagger is in the lake I would love to get him this year.  I talked to a guy last year that said he hooked him.  Said it was like having a fresh silver salmon on the line.  He had 15 pound line and broke it.

If the guy you talked to lost this fish on 15 pound line he needs to learn how to fight a fish. The heaviest line I use for trout is 5 pound and even though I havent caught a 15 pounder I have caught a 7 pounder on 4 pound line. Along with a 17 pound steelhead on 8 pound line and a 35 pound king on 12 pound line. Sounds like snagger is a lucky fish. Heres a couple caught with a fly and a 6x tippet.

Mineral lake used to be all i looked foward to every spring. stopped fishing it a while ago, maybe the crowds just got to me, but have alot of memories there. my biggest trout was caught there, using 4lb test, and trolling a rappala, with my 10ft car topper, and i had no net, exactly 11 times i tried to scoop him up,with my hand, so big i began asking God for help and making promises. i finally got him in by leaning over, and allowing water to enter the boat to assist me, almost tipped over. oh almost forgot, the fish was 34.5 inches, never did weigh it, that was ten years ago. a great great fish.

I always use 4 pound test when fishing Mineral.  My biggest out of Mineral is 7# 13oz.  Have also lost some big brooders from time to time.  But I don't loose too much sleep over a brood stock.  They don't eat well and are pretty darn ugly as well.

Thats the kind of fish that has earned the right to be photographed and released i am thinkin. One that big has been around a long time. Just my opinion though. Good luck to all.

I agree that a trout like that with such a long history deserves to be let go. That one fish creates so much hype for that lake that when its gone, it'll feel empty. I don't think that fish's life is worth the 34# thrust trolling motor they gave away for first prize last year. Let him go so some little kid has a chance at catching the fish of a life time. :twocents:

MIneral has been known for 10, 15+ pound trout as far back as I can remember.

I have seen many monsters come out of the lake over the years.

I believe it... :tinfoil:

I dont doubt there is a fish there in the upper teens. But to go through the opening day madness for a chance at it, not for me. I was going to go the second weekend but we will see.

there's some big fish in there for sure. I'll probably head up there a few weeks after the opener. Don't want to deal with all the people and the madness that is opening weekend on Mineral.

Mostly small stockers hitting the lines. did not see as many as normal bigger fish taken. We limited out with out any troubles but only took home 3 fish over 2lbs between 4 of us.

Derby winner was only 8.9lbs  :dunno:

Friday evening the fish were jumping like crazy all over the lake, and the bugs were out thick. They must have got there fill before the season started.
