Patterned Hevi Metal Today
« on: January 04, 2011, 05:04:58 PM »
I bought a few boxes of Hevi Metal in 3.5", 1.5oz #3's @ 1550fps to try. After a quick jump shoot at a local pond this morning, my partner and I stopped by my local gun club so I could use the patterning board during daylight hours.
Extended Range Patternmaster choke in my SBE II at 40 yds produced a solid 90 - 95% within the 30" circle. Dispersement was very even.
This past Sat and Sun I used them to put 14 big ducks in the blind and they seemed to hit hard even at the edge of my comfort range.
Patternmaster chokes shoot most loads great but I have run across some of the high speed stuff that shoots splotchy patterns with big gaps. I'm happy with the performance of this stuff. I'd like to find it on sale again.
Just wanted to share.

Thanks for the info.  I'm a Hevi-Metal guy myself and looking for a new choke.

I started the season with a couple boxes of 3" 2s. Had good success and worked flawlessly in my semi-auto.

Something I keep forgetting to post on one of these patterning posts is that guns shoot differently.  Most field grade guns shoot flat or to the point of aim. Trap guns normally shoot high for obvious reasons. About 60/40 or even 70/30 is common. Skeet guns shoot flat and so do many Sporting Clay guns.
Anyhow, patterning will make you aware of how your gun shoots. Shooting mine the other day reminded me to post this. My SBEII shoots about 60/40. This means that 60% of the pattern is above the center aiming dot and 40% is below it. Knowing this helps in the field and could answer some questions as to why you are or are not hitting well.
