Turkey trip report
« on: April 21, 2008, 06:36:31 PM »
:)I got a phone call Sunday morning 4/13. Bob said if I tried to camp out he'd kick my butt and dont bring food. Being a coward and lazy I complied. Got there about 4:00 went out driving around and shocked a couple times, no gobbles, moved into bunkhouse.
Monday: we went out to fix a gate and some fence, Nelson said we could put in a few posts on the hill, mabbe 15, turned into about 70!! ouch, I aint used to labor. Early Tuesday we are out, no gobbles no turkeys, cold as hell, snowing on and off. Went back to the fence crew, we put on the four wires, streached and all that, I was the staple pounder and all round bleeder.
Wednesday, out early, COLD, find some turkeys, got them real close, seconds to s shot,, Art moves and spooks them. Get a few responses, during the day. See a coyote, go back to truck switch to 22-250, Scorpian works again, pup whines, small male. Go to bunk house climb hill behind ranch, go over top, set up, scorpian/pup whines, two come, I miss, one stops about 150 yards out. Makes two for the day. Go to Rock Chuck area, we whack 7. Fun day, no turkeys. learn how to move cows and calves around to mix with different breeding bulls, learn how to read the ear tags. Help move a couple bulls.
Thursday, no turkeys close. some far off gobbles, Get to meet 82 years old rancher, still farming, great guy, many stories. Gives me access to his 3200 acres. Cougar tracks, coyote track, coyote den, see puppies and mom. find one turkey a hen. BOO HOO
Friday: Hike and hunt HARD, miles. look every where, no one is seeing turkeys.
Saturday, up early hunt, see  coyote cross road about a 1/4 mile away. sneak down there, set up, scorpian scores again. snows, COLD.
Sunday: leave early, drive home.

Great fun great vacation!! tired as heck. I may go back in 2 weeks.
thats all folks

Nice to know that for most of us, we're all on the same page.  Misery does love company.  For those that DID score opening week, you can be proud....and thankful.  I know I would be.

At least you weren't bored and got to get some shooting in.  :chuckle:

Bored is the word.  if it had not been so cold, I would have fallen asleep in my blind everytime I set up in an area.

David

Only two defining forces have ever died for you.....
1. Jesus Christ
2. The American Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, and Coast Guardsman.
One died for your soul; the other for your freedom.
