Floor Pedistal Mount?
« on: January 09, 2011, 01:21:59 PM »
So I'm looking to get my '10 whitey mounted in the form of a "floor pedistal" and was looking for some ideas; please post pics if you have one (whitey, mule deer, whatever).  I have a couple wall pedistal mounts but I'm looking for something different.  Looking for ideas of forms as well so thanks in advance for any suggesstions/examples you have.

I built this one for a member here. Doesn't have the doors on it in the pic. This one is all walnut with a dark walnut stain. I build them with 4" casters so they roll easily on any surface. I build them with or without the center stile. Typically fit one shelf inside too. I make them finished on all four sides so they can really go anywhere in a room. Ive built 4 or 5 that style, all have been for members on this site. That one there should have a huge bull on it, but don't think its made it that far yet :chuckle:

I moved this to taxidermy, so it might get more responses for you. Here is one that i like, my taxidermist in new zealand did this one. Even though it is a stag its an idea for you.

If you can imagine it more than likely a taxidermist with enough experience can do it.  It all depends on what you want done and how much you want to pay.  Price usually is the determining factor on what people are willing to have done with there animal.

Yeah, your typical octagonal/tapered style is the most common. They kind of limit your mount to a corner though. I like the idea of the more furniture style piece. Of course the ones I build are all size specific for the mount. I couldn't imagine a deer mount on one that big I have pictured, but it is definitely suiting for a elk or moose. People really like the "usable" storage too. Charlie's doing a wall pedestal on my buck from this year just because I really don't have the room in my current house for anything real elaborate. When I eventually build a bigger house, I have plans for a much bigger "game" room, then I'll have a chance to get real creative :chuckle:

Why would an octagonal ped base limit a mount to the corner of a room?  :dunno:

There are a lot of different types of wood to choose from. I would suggest going to someplace like Woodcrafter or Rockler and looking at the different woods available. Look at where you want to put your mount and the space available. Most can be a functional piece of furnature by incorporating a door for storage underneath or a small bar for glasses and your favorite spirits. Send me a PM if you would like more info.
