Kent Faststeel vs. All Purpose?
« on: January 14, 2011, 02:34:47 PM »
Any opinions based on experience shooting these shells? How do they compare? Yes I have both of the boxes in front of me so I can see the FPS difference, but im lookin for personal experiences good or bad or just comparisons between these two shells? Thanks..

Shot ducks with both, more with the faststeel. Can't say the all purpose is much different though.

Faststeel, it's faster.  1550 - 1625 fps depending on what shell you are using.  You drop down a little with a 1-1/4 ounce load.  I believe the all purpose is 1300-1400 fps.  Good load for upland bird, but if your trying to save a few bucks, you will get what you pay for.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

Yeah the 3 inch ones is what I have too. 1 1/8oz 2's seems a little light at only 1475, but hell it will still kill ducks.

At the distances you will(should)be shooting your ducks at, you will not even notice a difference between those two loads.
My experience patterning tells me to stay at or below 1500 fps. Above this fps gives splotchy patterns with many flyers. At or below this fps gives tight, even patterns.
I do not have any experience patterning the 'all purpose' but have patterned many Faststeel loads and like them all at or below 1550 fps.

I had terrible luck with Kent fast steel when it first came out. And then last Christmas got a box and I had great results so now I'm sold on it  :dunno:

Shot a limit with Faststeel on friday, then a limit with All-purpose yesterday...couldn't tell any difference...I will say that they eject nicely and haven't had a problem with them....unlike remington...

Okay here is my unscientific test results.
 Had 2 boxes of each.
4 trips to Ridgefield--amazingly  all out of blind 11.

3in  1 1/8 oz   #2 shot

First---  I have killed 4 times more birds with fasteel than All purpose. Could be me, :hunt2: or the shot. Most of my days seem equal on my effort.

second--- same range--birds die with fasteel--fly with all purpose.

Third--- Took the shells apart. Weights are in gr, because thats what my scale does.

Here goes------------

Fasteel  21 gr powder                              all purpose  17 gr
bb count  126                                                135
bb size   3.81mm                                         3.68mm
total wt of bb's  488gr                                462gr

so there you have it.
My personal experience: Fasteel kills more birds.
I have not patterned both , yet.
 I shoot a modified choke.
It's not true that I am good for nothing---I can be used as a bad example!!
