Montana antelope help?
« on: January 17, 2011, 11:02:56 AM »
I am looking for help from someone who is farmiliar with montanas rules.
I am assuming in the drawing results posted on their website that the surplus tags listed to the right are available for purchase after the draw?
If I apply for an area that has surplus tags is that almost a garuntee for a draw?
How much does license and tag run?
Are you allowed to buy additional tags like in wyoming?  If so what do they cost and how many can you purchase.
I am doing reasearch on their website but it is a little confusing and easier for me to ask someone who might know.
Thanks.

If you go to the montana fish and wildlife site it explains a lot. I applied for a nonresident Antleope tag last year and didnt get it even though the previous years had given out fewer tags then what was available. My brother lives and hunts in montana and explained to me that the use the number of tags given out to tags surplus in a given area to determine the amount of available tags for the following year ( I have not checked into this ) but hes been hunting for sometime out there. also as of this year they are adding more nonres tags to be given out, but raising prices. deadline last I checked was June 1st for antelope. as for price it was I think 225-250 bucks for me to apply last year. If your not drawn you get a refund minus 5 doller drawing fee. All the above applies for deer a (buck). I will be applying for both again this year, and any info I get Ill post on here for you.

Sled, Montana does have surplus antelope and deer tags.  They typically go on sale in early August.  They are mostly doe/fawn but a few units have "any antelope" tags. They are sold on a first come, first served basis.  They are not tied to the draw.

The doe/fawn licenses have cost $50 in the past.

Here's what the top of the list looked like last year:

I called MT F&G in 2010 for leftovers  after the draw and was told only doe tags for deer (wt)  were available. No lope tags left over in 2010 :dunno:

Maybe in 2011

Depending on when you called that could be true.  They sell out rather quickly in most units.  As you can see, there were quite a few available in some of the units initially.

Not questioning you Bob as I  am sure you know more about hunting MT than I.

Can only relate my own experience. I contacted  early MT the first day leftover lope tags were available and that what i was told. I subsequently spoke to 2 MT Bios and they said Lope numbers were down and expect the same in 2011  :dunno:

Maybe did not call early enough?

I hunted archery antelope in Montana in 2006.  At the time you could draw a 900 (I think) series for antelope for archery and if you drew you had first shot at a rifle doe tag for $75.  This was an archery draw, so I don't know if you are interested but the draw percentage was 99.8%.  That series (whatever it was) allowed you to hunt with archery gear for most of the season.  We hunted around White Sulfur Springs.  I got this small buck with my bow at 20 yards from a blind with a decoy during the rut.  I had shots at bigger bucks, but they would come in at 60 mph and see that my decoy didn't run away.  They would stop at 40-50 yards skidding to a stop outside my comfort range.  This little buck was about the same size as the decoy and I think was looking for something that wouldn't chase him to the other side of the county.  Not big, but a trophy to me.  I went back for the doe rifle tag and after seeing folks chasing and shooting at goats from their 4 wheelers, we went home.   I talked to the warden in the area and he didn't really want to confront those good folks...

Ribka, I think you were probably given bad information.  I've purchased surplus tags in MT for many years.  However, they can sell out in a matter of minutes in some of units.

If there was ever a year to put in for MT tags this is the one. With the increase in costs there are sure to be less people putting in. Maybe not though.
