Favorite full body goose decoys?
« on: January 17, 2011, 10:06:40 PM »
Whats your favorite full body goose decoys? why? does it make a huge difference between lessers or greaters? other than the greaters being a little more visable from a distance?

I don't have a favorite but my opinion is for these smaller birds we get on the westside I do believe in the smaller bodies. These geese see a lot of big goose decoys and hear a lot of big, deep goose calling so it's good to change it up.  Just depends on the type of birds you're hunting.  Lot of geese have been killed over big, full body goose decoys so definitely not saying it's wrong. Just my :twocents:

I like the lessor Dave Smith Decoys.  My personal prefference.  I have shot many limits of geese over them.  In many cases hunting smaller fields on the west side just using 12 - 24 DSD.  The geese seem to come right in allow over the decoy shooting.   :twocents:  I do have other goose decoys that I have only pulled out a few times this year.  Big Foots, Averys, Drop Zones and Hard Cores.  I will still go with the DSD.   :twocents:

Dave Smith Decoys or Dropzones.  I hunt over both
If i was hunting out of a trailer I would use the dropzones but when you have to pack them the bases become a big PITA.

Ive got Bigfoots, GHG's, DSD's, and Hardcores. I personally think HC's are the best bang for the buck. They are light weight, easy to pack in, and I kill just as many geese over them as all the others. :twocents:

But the most important thing about goose hunting isn't the decoys.... #1 is being on the "X", #2 being invisible, #3 the decoys and the way they are set.

For instance last week I hunted over 6 Dozen DSD's and all the bird landed about 100 yards away from me. If your not on the "X", trafficing geese can be a B!TC#!!

I am running straight DSD this year. 6.5 dozen lessers and a handful of honkers. I used to run GHG and Dakotas, but the ACE DSD's are lighter and more durable. I am also a fan of having big spreads, mostly because I hunt a lot of public land. I also think it helps to have more decoys when your trying to pull in those large late season large flocks of cacklers. You couldn't pay me to run dropzones, they lack detail. The older Hardcores are amazing the new ones not so much. I am by no means an expert, just kinda picky.

I used to run stuffers, but to hard to maintain on the west side with all the rain.  Great for the east side of the state.

the thing about dropzones, especially when hunting in wet weather is that dont shine like the DSDs.
When the weather fronts push through and it goes from downpour to sun in 5 min, its really nice to have that rough finish on the decoys to kill that glare.
