My first honker
« on: January 17, 2011, 04:35:01 PM »
When hunting with a friend this morning, and did a few things for the first time.  Never hunted from a boat and neither had my dogs. Had a few ducks fly this way and that but nothing close enough to even shoot at.  Around 930 AM a whole flock of honkers fly over us, and I nailed one.  After the first shot they showed us how quick they can get out of range.  My labs did fine in keeping the bird in place, and when we shot at the second fly over, that came right after the first flyover they charged the way we were shooting.  Too bad there wasn't anything for them to retrive. I was using my Mossberg Model 500 with 3" BB shot. Dropped the goose like a stone in water.   I have it in the freezer and going to ship it out first thing in the morning to Willow Creek Taxidermy.  Cant wait to see it on my living room wall.   John thanks for your help in getting the bird ready!

I plan on it, my wife barely gave me the go ahead to get this one taxied  :chuckle:  I weighed him, and he was 12 LBS, I wonder how much meat that would provide?

Good for you getting it mounted, got my first Honker several years ago and it went in the oven, now I'm hooked on geese.  :)  What did the pups think of it?  I sent my pouch after his first honker earlier this year in a field. He ran to it then stopped and looked at me for a second then grabbed the bird by the neck and drug it to me.  It was kind of funny, I think the size confused him.  Since then he doesn't hesitate to pick them up.  it was a decent sized one to.

They have no probs.  I introduced them to geese prior to the season to let them establish the geese as prey and not to be afraid.  They had fun chasing geese around the water front :chuckle:  The only thing they did wrong was drop him and run the direction we were shooting thinking they could tackle more geese.

Alright had a great weekend, got some geese on Saturday, but could only retreive one of them.  The area I was hunting had about 2 acres of driftwood, and I couldnt walk to the goose due to the depth, and my dogs couldnt swim through it :'( Got one of the geese though, and as soon as I can figure out how to send a text to my email with non internet phone I will.  :dunno: I shot a mallard this morning over the goose decoys.  This is the last weekend that I get to hunt, and it was by far my best.  Thanks to Upwind, Hillbilly, and washelkhnter thank you for helping me learn the ropes, and taking me with you on my first waterfowl season! :salute: :salute: :salute: WCtaxidermy, thank's for all the tips on how to handle a bird that I want to taxi, and Skybuster thank you for lending me your decoys :rockin: :rockin: :brew: This website is more than just a forum, there is some really kick a@# guys and gals that are very helpful, and great mentors and hunting buddies!! Here are some pics from the water fowl season.
