I feel kinda out of place saying that I use an old-style sidelock percussion rifle.  Actually, it's a Cabelas Hawken carbine, 54 cal. with a 21 inch barrel.  About 5 years ago, when I got back into deer hunting with blackpowder, I hunted with the Hawken I built in the '70s out of Dixie Gun Works parts.  .58 Cal. 1-1/8" x 32" barrel.  I got a deer with it that year, but my arms felt like they were 6 inches longer from lugging that cannon around.  By the next year I had the .54 carbine.  Guess I just can't wrap my old brain around the concept of an in-line muzzle loader.

Lokidog;  I've always wondered--ever have the cap fall off the nipple when you cock the hammer?  (It probably stays in the hammer and goes off anyway, huh?)

You're not the only one. My Deerstalker is a side lock and fair-chase posted that he also hunts with a Deerstalker. I really like the looks of the Cabelas Hawken- both the carbine and the standard model. Someday I might get one. Doesn't the carbine have a pretty fast twist?

Never had the problem.  The hammer is off the cap when hunting anyways in the half-cock position.  It is a really tight fit, sometimes even have to use a knife to pop the unfired cap.  Love the gun, crazy fast lock time and the nipple goes right into the powder charge.  Really light also and has a removeable breech plug.

Hunt with the T/C Black Diamond XTR and I often take my Cabela's Hawkins out to the range and shoot as well, I've taken several animals with both rifles.  I love the Black Diamond, however my Cabela's Hawkins will always be my favorite for I purchased that one as a build-it-yourself it and did all of the stock work and even learned how to blue with that rifle.  Ahh, fond memories!
