5X3 Elk??
« on: April 29, 2008, 09:52:46 PM »
Finally found a few elk sheds on a short walk today. I never get the chance to look for elk horns so I get excited over even rag horns. These were laying about 10 feet apart. Bottom end looks the same but the top end does not. What do you think, same bull??? Or do I need to find the rag horn matches? I think same bull.

I think it could very easily be the same bull if they were that close together!?  And on the 5 point his 2nd is very weak which would allow for more growth up top. No elk grows perfet antlers!

check the shape of the bases...the best way to know for sure.  Also, texture, color help too.

I figured it was. I also saw 3 rag horns still packing. Shouldn't they be almost all dropped by now? Excuse my ignorance, like I said I have been a deer horn hunter for ever. Just started looking for elk this year a few times.

Im no biologist but the rags tend to hang on to them longer, Im guessing the weight of the horns on the bigger bulls helps them drop sooner, aswell as they need more time to grown there new hardware??I've also read that the poorer there health the longer they will keep them???I was up towards Randle this last weekend and saw two fairly heavy" Better than average" 5's. One still had a right and the other had a left????

I'd say same Bull ... It has the same characteristics on each side if you look close.

Maybe he has spent some time in a pot grow while he was growing them and it messed with his horns :chuckle: :chuckle:
