are you using dekes to get these birds w/in "shootin" range?  I take it you have to be closer for the lens than you do for the steel.

Not all the time Quad but sometimes.  Yes, the shotgun reaches further than a lens, at least for this kind of a shot.

I honestly never noticed the perfect heart shape on their bill until this photo.   I can't wait to go look at the woodie I painted and see how close I was. LOL
