dumb white birds
« on: January 23, 2011, 10:31:28 AM »
I was out at crab creek this morning to sight in a new rifle, came up on about 60 birds, I didn't know what they were. they were about double the size of a dove and pure white with pink eyes and mouth, they were standing on the ground and sitting in trees, they were dumb as a box of rocks, I could walk right up to them, couldn't even shoot them. any ideas let me know thanks... :dunno:

Sounds like someone got out of the pigeon business to me :dunno:. Most likely someones fancy pigeon flock that could not or did not want to feed them anymore. Feed is getting expensive and people (buyers) don't generally want to pay more for items that are seldom a necessity.

was out there today.. some kid caught three of them with his hands, said he was going to keep them as pets. There was also a hunter out there that said he shot a few and ate them. Dont know how good that would be...... The white birds, which look like pidgins, all have blue bands on them. I wonder if they are some kind of homing pidgin  :dunno:

On my way out today there were about three dead ones on the side of the road, someone has been shooting them.

I am glad someone posted about this. My brother and I went out there the Sunday before it closed and there were white feathers EVERYWHERE. We could not figure out what they came from.

Called King pigeons. Someone's training pen probably got broken into and let a bunch loose. Kings don't home so- they'd just fly away. Kings are traditionally raised as "eaters" because they get bigger than others. Never tried it but, why not?

They've been in the area for about 5 years.  Not sure where they came from or if someone has let multiple sets loose either by accident or on purpose, but I see them a bunch when fishing Nun, Lenice, etc.

White doves, which represent peace, love and prosperity.  Anyone who willfully kills a white dove will face many years of bad karma.   :chuckle:
