I finally have enough money saved to go on a moose hunt. Not a lot but about $5000.00. I would like some referals if you guy's/ gal's have any. Thanks very much

Many years ago, we hunted with the father or uncle of the current head guide at One Eye Outfit west of Williams Lake. I can not vouche for the people, if genetics counts for anything they will be great, but the country is fantastic. Gentle sloping plain of meadows and pecker poles up into the goat crags. More sheds around than any place except a feeding station.

Prince George area is really good, and almost anywhere north of that you can find some monster bulls.

A friend of a friend had a horror story of an outfitter not allowing them to bring out their meat. Claimed it was to feed their bears. 3 guys on a turbo otter and no meat. I will try to get the name.

Baiting bears in BC is highly illegal too. If in fact thats what they wanted to do with the meat?!

I'm not opposed to DIY in Ak, It's just a matter of finding others to go along. Non of my slacker friends want to do it. Either they don't have the money or they think it would be to hard.

You might try checking with Corkscrew Creek Adventures in BC. He has very limited tags and lots of moose. Paul also has great lynx at 1/2 the price of everyone else.

Moose hunts are one of the hunts that are either great or very bad. Make sure you talk to a TON of references! Not a few but a ton! There is a lot of hunters that pay big $ and don't even see a moose on there hunt. I have a buddy that has been in those shoes. More then once. Be very careful in your selection.

moose hunting is one of the lowest % success hunts for outfitters. Another thing to ask is there harvest %, after talking with the references you will know if they are being honest with there numbers.

I've got a good reference for you that I can persoally vouch for for Canadian Moose in Alberta. Gonna be a touch higher than your $5,000, but his success rate is second to none and I've seen it first hand.

Ripper, A friend and I have been saving for a BC or Alberta moose hunt also. We are planning for 2012 at this point. We have talked to lots of folks who have had bad and good experiences. Seems like the biggest difference in price and success is whether you want a trophy or not. We have decided that we don't care as much about the trophy as we do about the meat and since you can drive it will be cheaper overall. The prices also get more expensive the further north you go because of the species of moose...We have narrowed our search down some and this outfitter seems to have a good reputation and %. http://www.mikesoutfitting.com/ We are also going to look for other options at the Big Horn Show. I would check into Moose Island Outfitters, http://www.mooseislandoutfitters.com/ or any of the other guides or outfitters who belong to GOABC "Guide Outfitters Assiciation of Brittish Cloumbia".

Ask an outfitter if he has any unsatisfied customers and if you can talk to them. The outfutter's reaction should tell you alot.

Rip you may try Lancaster outfitters in BC. I don't know whats happening with them since the one brother Cam passed away but i went on a muledeer hunt with them and it was top notch . the whole time they talked about how killer there unit was for moose.

I have been on a few moose hunts up there around Prince George and I feel that the end of September hunts are usually better than the early season hunts. I would also make sure the outfitter has immediate access to some sort of cold storage for your meat. I would make sure to let the outfitter know what type of hunting you expect to do, or at least find out what methods he uses when the rut is off and or on. The first time I went up I could not believe we were driving 100 plus miles a day looking at clear cuts. I had the expectation in my head that we would be out calling over marshes and ponds. I know now that when the bulls are not in the rut you need to cover territory to up your chances at seeing them. When we went up in 2004 and 2008 both my Grandfather and I had our bulls called in and killed within 50 yards. If you hit the rut just right the difference is night and day. Good luck on your hunt and I hope it works out well. We hunt with Ambush outfitters, the owner of the operation is Shane and he will be at the Puyallup sportsman show. He should have a bunch of photo's there and video as well. Ask him about the guys from Marsyville that hunt with him.

1st thing I would ask is, What's your success rate over 10 years ? Get references and call 'em and see what they say. If the outfitter won't give you any, move on to the next. It's alot of money to fork out and get screwed.

- We hunted out of Smithers BC in 08! Fun hunt, we went 2for4 on 45" Bulls. The one thing I didnt like is we booked are hunt 2 years in advance and the outfitter pushed are hunt dates back becouse the group ahead of us couldnt make it on a certain day letting us know just 2 months before are hunt. We were the 3rd group hunting out of that camp that year so it was hunted hard before we got there. The group ahead of us all got bulls! It was fun but I would ask if any groups will be there before you and if so find a outfitter that can get you in unhunted area! All the big rutin bulls were already killed before we got there so I was kinda pissed! My dad and I never seen a Bull!

Thanks a bunch everyone. I will look into all the info I get and let you know what I find out and what I decide on. I will probably go to the puyallup show and see whats available. I'll keep you posted. Has anybody heard of Omineca outfitters out of Prince George? They have a 9 day trophy bull hunt for $4150.00. Seems like a good hunt.

I have hunted with http://www.ambushoutfitters.com/ six times. Four moose hunts and two spring bear hunts. We (the wife and me) have never been skunked!! Shane Wakelyn owns and runs the business. I know he has a booth at the Puyallup shown right now. We are going down tomorrow to say hello to him. You won't go wrong with Ambush Outfitters if you book a hunt with them. He is right in your price range for the hunt also. Good luck.

I'd have to agree I spent a week in northern Alberta along the piece river on a moose hunt. We saw animals everyday and filled most of our tags on moose and other species. If you want an extrodinary hunt and want to see wildlife of caliber we could only dream of in Washington Northern Alberta is the place to go.

I second Paul Lowrie@ Corkscrew Creek Adventures. Nothing fancy, good grub, good stock, and Pauls a hard workin SOB. Killed a great double shovel Mtn Caribou with him about 4 years ago.
