What pose?
« on: January 25, 2011, 06:40:48 PM »
I shot this wood duck the other day and can't really decide how I should have him mounted. Originally I wasnt gonna get it mounted, but my dad thought it looked good and was willing to help me out. So what do you guys think?

Not sure what pose, but I do know a certain taxidermist on the site I'd definitely take any bird to! You already have a taxi picked? I generally like their opinion on mount style too.

Yeah my dad sort of already has it lined up with someone in the yakima area, I know there are some really good taxi's on this site though.

Should make a cool mount regardless! That's a sweet looking duck.

I would do the hen, but she put up quite the fight before giving it up. The head to the rock trick did he in after the neck ringing didn't work (for some reason wood ducks are hard to ring).

Hi 270shooter, what I would recommend before you select a pose is to get your bird to your Taxidermist and have him/her thaw your bird and give it a good pre-skin inspection.  They should be able to tell you the condition of your bird and any damage it might have, feather loss, broken bones etc.  Then you can start thinking of a pose from there.  Things to think about in respect to a pose is direction you want your bird to face, how much room you have for the bird once it's mounted, type of base, etc.  I personally like a standing pose of some sort on a Woddie because it shows off more of the bird than a flying mount would.  If you do choose a flying mount, make sure you pick a pose that will show off most angles of the bird as possible because of their brilliant colors.  Hope that helps.

I have one mounted. I like the standing mounts myself. They are a great bird to mount and look great!
