How come no one commented on the world record spike that was posted.  What a monster, good thing he didn't get the chance to shed those things.

The spike was shot by accident..I had a buck tag and a doe tag in my pocket (second deer) tag.  I thought I was shooting a doe. I saw the little spikes when I walked up to him..and started shaking my head... Because in an "any buck" season the regulation definition reads..any antler projection above hairline..So I had to us my buck tag on him.   :'(  .The landowner has seen a big 5 pt that morning chasing a "doe"..but he was chasing the toe head.  So that is the story of the spiker.  He was great eating by the way! :)
Wild Turkey, Walleyes, Whitetails and Wapiti..These are a few of my favorite things!!

OK, the guy on the left is on this site from time to time, but I'm gonna tell on him...
The buck he is holding died along this timeline...

10:03:15 am  Jon is asleep in the backseat of an F350

10:03:20 am Jared (the guy in the middle) yells "buck!" pointing at a buck not 30 feet from the passenger side of the truck

10:03:21 am Pathfinder (that's me on the right) applies the brakes to the F350

10:03:25 am Jon is out of the truck, rifle in hand, loading a shell and blinking the sleep out of his eyes

10:03:26 am deer decides that things are about to go badly for him and exits stage left

10:03:28 am deer takes a flying leap over a fallen tree and crashes on the other side, Jon's bullet in the back of his neck, dead as a wedge.

10:03:30 am Jon stands there, still blinking sleepily, rifle smoking, his "roots" showing...

Pathfinder101 and Jared to Jon :  "...Jeeze Jon...you look like you have done that before...roadhunt much..?" :chuckle:

Yeah, Jon gets teased a lot about that incident.  Stuff like:

"Yeah, Jon is one of the most dedicated hunters I know... I mean, that guy will hunt till he's carsick..." :chuckle:

Don't know if this counts but a couple years back we went over near Orient for the Late WT. Arrived at 4 Am so slept in the truck. about 9 AM we heard a shot and seconds later a neighbor drove by. ( not the most ethical one)
Next day me and the better half headed out early, and were going back to my buddies at about 9 am since we forgot something . As we get near his driveway I looked down a property entrance and there is a 5 point or better.  Kept driving, walked back and he managed to stay in earshot, but out of sight.
About then I figured it was a smart move to be around the area every morning about that time. Other hunting  partners and the owner showed up that day so we were watching for him on Friday and Saturday  we saw many does and fleeting glimpses of him or a buddy of his.

Sunday we have to leave and I went out hiking and I came back before my friend (the owner) left early  for Tri Cities. Talked to him, he left and I backed the truck partly into the garage.to start  loading. I checked my cell phone, saw it was 9;05, so I put our Chesapeak retriever in the cabin, turned around to head our and there was a deer, and it was him!
My rifle was leaning against the house just outside the garage entrance, and I managed to sneak my arm around the corner and get on him (barely 30 yards) without him aware of me.
Boom! Right out of the garage next to the truck. and off he runs. DAMN how could i have missed! Off I go up the driveway to the road, around a treed area and back down toward the river. There's deer all over the place and there he (or is it?) is running back toward the house with some does. After a while  the deer seemed to clear out so I started looking for him in the brush.
Couldn't follow blood so I just kept looking and couldn't find squat! Finally let the dog out and within 5 minutes she found him for me. I don't think he was the only buck since I couldn't really see him doing what I saw  up the road as he was hit pretty hard. Pic is as soon as we found him.
