problems with new remington 700 300 win mag
« on: February 16, 2011, 01:08:20 PM »
I bought it brand new and after 15 rounds the bolt would not pull the spent casings out of the chamber, I took it back to where I got it from and they sent it to remington free of charge to get it worked on.
just sucks having problems with a new gun :'(. btw I did try cycling the the empty casings that had worked in the gun at first so I know it wasnt a problem with the ammo

That sucks.  I'm a big Remington fan, but over the last few years, I've heard of several new rifles being sent back with issues.  Some with severe dings and scratches, a couple that won't feed correctly, and another with the same problem you are having.  I hope they get these problems ironed out, as there are many competitors out there that are starting to get their business.

You didn't shove a wooden dowel down the barrel to get the stuck case out to look at it?

Could be an extractor issue. Could be a rough chamber. Inspecting the spent brass might give some clues. Did you clean the barrel/chamber before you fired it? Were any of the unfired cartridges stiff when moving the bolt into battery?

I used a cleaning rod to get the casing out, barely had to put any pressure on it and it came out.
they were over the counter federal 150 grain.

I cleaned the gun before shooting and every round for the first five rounds and every five rounds after that. the brass had nicks in it on the base of the casings so it made me think it was the extractor.

An extractor should be an easy fix for them.

I asked about the brass as recently there was a guy at the range with a brand new Rem in 338 Lapua.  Hand loads, but he knows what he's doing. So.. Each case was difficult to extract. Looking at the brass, we all surmised that the chamber was rough hone. He had it polish and all is well. In fact, the same box of ammo groups better now. -That doesn't make sense, but it does. Must be something with case expansion.

What a bummer! How did you like the rifle up to that point?
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

I loved it, It did not kick as much as I thought it would. I did not get a chance to shoot it at long distances though so after I check to make sure it is sighted in watch out coyotes    or atleast hopefully :chuckle:

had this happen to me with my rem 700 300 win mag. it was my casings i hand loaded and didn't re-size the casings right. haven't had the problem since tho but that was a couple years ago and that ammo is all shot up. ran into a guy while elk hunting that had problems with his rem 700 30-06 he said whenever he put a shell in and closed the bolt the gun fired.  i thought it was someone shooting at elk before shooting time but he said nope it was him loading his gun.

I saw some reports on that happening and remington has said that in all the guns that they have investigated they could never get it to fire without pulling the trigger and in all of the ones that people said that it was happening in it was cause they did not maintain the gun right or they messed with the trigger pull ect

ive loaded up so many combos. grandslams, nosler partitions, nosler accubonds, barns x, hornady interbonds. best load i made was with 165gr nosler partitions RL22 powder nickle plated casings i believe i loaded them to shoot over 3400fps had quarter sized groupings at 100yds.  NEVER LOAD NOSLER ACCUBONDS UNLESS U LIKE TO WASTE MEAT. ive shot a couple elk and a deer with the accubonds and blew HUGE entrance holes and no exit holes. the last elk i shot with the accubonds i could stick my fist in the entrance hole. its good for knockdown power but terrible for wasting meat. my dad shot a deer with his 7mm loaded nosler accubonds shot was 150yrds and he blew a hole in it. the entrace hole was atleast 2" in diameter. i have never had any issues with my rem700 300 win mag. i clean the heck out of it its my baby its cleaner that it was when it came out of the factory. also added a muzzle break and a limb saver recoil pad to it so it kicks like a .22  :)

thanks for the advice on the loads, thats is crazy how much damage those accubonds do. I am thinking about using the nossler partitions but have not decided what size grain of bullet.
where did you get your limb saver recoil pad?

I can't remember where I got the limbsaver from. Its one that u screw on to the end of the stock not one that slips over the end. I like the nosler partitions personally. I've loaded 165g and 180g I like the 165s more because they shoot faster and flatter. If u don't like the the kick get a muzzle break put on its well worth it and looks awesome. I will see if I can upload a pic of my rem 700 300 win mag
