« on: January 30, 2011, 06:21:13 PM »
New to dog hunting...so new in fact I haven't tried it yet.. :chuckle:

saw some older posts but wondering if there was anything new out?
Currently use 150gr  core locks for deer..
Would this be fine to use? or?
New rifle is out of the question....just spent my play money on a new pistolio....

You can bust them with anything from 17 to 50bmg. The 30-06 will work great! The core locks arn't to spendy and will work fine.

Any old round will work... I often use military ball ammo... use whatever is handy and cheep you nick em with an 06 round and they die!  ;)
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

If you just want to make a dead coyote, anything out of your -06 will work. If you want to sell fur, you need a new rifle.

They're not worth anything anyway. I just shot one last weekend with a 270 and a 150 grain Grand Slam. You sure don't need anything special out of the 30-06. Just use whatever you've got- preferably the same load you have it sighted in with. The 150 grain core lokt out of a 30-06 will probably make for a pretty big exit hole but if you don't care about the hides then that won't matter. For less pelt damage you'd want to go with a bullet that doesn't expand as easily like a Barnes or Nosler Partition.

It's good practice for your deer rifle too...

Loading 170gr flatnose cast bullets works gread out of the 30-06 you can buy them reasonable from a comercial caster and loads are in the Lyman loading manuel.  Used to use them in my 300 Savage for fox hunting in the late 70's when furs were at their highest, very little pelt damage and accurate out t 200yrds.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Used an '06 a lot in the 70's for Yotes. Ball or old military stuff worked good. Made a bunch of money with that one! Then I got a custom built 22-250. Small Sako action. Ohhh Yeahhh!
