2010-2011 season pictures

This is my "I can't wait till next year," post.  I had a great year with my dogs and friends.  It was a good season with only one major mis-hap...but they tell me that broken stocks on shotguns can be fixed!  It made me cry when I fell and it  went over a cliff to land on rocks.  The dogs did well, Cass is cruising into her 9th year as a chukar dog and Addy is going to be five soon.  I have a new pup coming to my home, and Addy is being bred in Iowa as I write this.  Some pictures to highlight the season.  Enjoy!

Great pictures! I can't wait until next year either. My brother and I chased some huns around this last season, too, but I never connected. We figured out where some chukar are, also. Can't wait to get back after them!

Great looking dogs! I have an English Springer Spaniel and he loves going out, he is 14 months so he is full of himself. I work him a couple days a week. I noticed you have a nice looking collar on your pup. What type are you using and what are you achieving/trying to achieve. I've really been thinking of getting one.

I get lots of comments on the collars I use.  One is her regular collar with ID on it. The wide one is for visibility because they will range out a ways and I want to pick them out of the heavy sage brush.  The other collar is her beeper collar and also her training collar.  Cass never needs a reminder any more. I sometimes nick Addy just to keep her in sight. I collar condition them and only use the nick on a low power. 

When I hunt with Cass it is almost a silent hunt as she checks back and ranges about 100 yds maximum.  Addy will get out, but is honest and holds her points.  They both will search and search for cripples and dead birds.  I have a lot of fun hunting them.  Lee

Thanks for posting Lee. Looks like you had a good year. I was wondering what the cost break down is of shipping your dog to be bred verses AI. I would think it has to be close to a break even but I know you know more than I do. Are there draw backs to AI?

Shannon, As of now, we cannot AI our dogs in the VDD system.  It would still be pretty expensive from what I have heard.  Lots of vet costs and the timing has to be right.  I try to send my bitch when she is just in heat as she has been an early breeder.  She actually stood for the male I sent her to the first time they met which was 7 days into her cycle.  (It took one minute for them to tie!)  Cass was a later breeder and stood on the 11th or  12 day.  It would be nice to AI as I really only feel comfortable sending my bitch on a direct flight, with no layovers or having to make another connecting flight.  Addy is in Iowa now and the stud dog owner drove to Minneapolis/St Paul to pick her up and will drive her back there for her return flight on Friday.  So you can imagine how closely I watched the storm that hit just to the east of there this week. 

I did have a good year, lots of fun, lots of good dog work from seasoned dogs.  Already looking forward to next year for more of the same.  I am getting a pup from a friend of mine to add to the mix, and may keep one from this litter.  (Maybe!)

There is no such thing as to many bird dogs. I am getting another this year also. Why doesn't the VDD allow AI?

I love hunting Chukars. Such a wonderful bird to eat too. I plan on getting out more this year for Chukars and Huns, I get up in your area quite a bit during the season Lee, I would love to stop by and check out your dogs if you would not mind? I will likely look for another dog in a year or two and love the Drahthaars.
