.300 Win Mag is also a very efficient (and popular) Elk, Moose and Mule Deer Cartridge.  I just put a new Shilen barrel on my Rem 700 and need to break it in when it warms up!

7mm Mag is about on a par with the 30-06. But with a lot more recoil.

I figure this statement right here is the most likely one of the thread so far to start a battle... 

I shoot the '06, but knew a guy who was so in love with his favorite round he swore his 7mm RemMag all but had the steaks cut and wrapped by the time you got the the elk.

Either one is a good elk round, especially if you use heavy-for-caliber bullets in the '06 (no lighter than 180's in a good bullet).  But really, the gun doesn't do the hunting, the hunter does.  Just do your part to get as close as you can and put a good bullet in the right spot.   To paraphrase what Bob33 said in another thread "the elk aren't smart enough to know the difference."

Petersen's Hunting magazine(last fall issue, month ?)had a humorous and sarcastic article in it titled something like '10 worst deer cartridges' or something like that. Anyhow, the 7mm mag was listed. A lot of noise and recoil for not much more than a 30-06 could give you with a lot less of both. I just happen to feel the same way. I gave the magazine to a guy in deer camp that shoots a 7mag. He even agreed.

Not quite finalized yet but close. .338 Win Mag, 75gr IMR 4831, 210gr Barnes TTSX, 2777fps. No pressure signs. Sub MOA.
It should get closer to 2900fps but we'll see. I usually shoot 225gr TBBC bullets but thought I'd work up a good load with the 210gr Barnes.
Either will be good elk medicine.

.340 Weatherby magnum is an excellent choice if you don't mind paying $70 bucks for factory loads. 1000 yard shots will reach easily, and have tremendous nockdown power on any of the largest north american game. Hell, I would feel MORE then confident taking it to Alaska to take a grizz or two

.300 WEATHERBY mag. if your going to get a .300 dont even bother with the win mag.  look at the ballistics and compare.....

I'm with CamoDup on this one.  Sure, you can go .300 RUM, .30-378, yadda yadda yadda, BUT look at a reloading manual or two and you'll see how pathetically inefficient they are compared to the .300 Weatherby.  For what a pound of gunpowder sells for these days, I'll take a Weatherby and not look back.  To a lesser degree I'd say the same thing about the 7mm Weatherby Mag over the 7mm Rem Mag.

The money I saved buying a 300 RUM instead of a Weatherby easily compensates for a couple more dollars worth of powder when reloading each year.

I loaded for the 30-378 for years and years.  Brother bought a RUM and it was way more efficeint that the WBY 30-378.  Ten grains less powder yielded 130 more fps.
