Friend's First Buck (Not Road Hunted)
« on: February 01, 2011, 10:34:45 AM »
My girlfriend's daughter had been dating this guy for a few months. I liked the guy and we talked hunting a lot. He had never big game hunted and he asked several times to go with me. I finally told him I would take him for a couple days of late buck. I had just lost my job so we had to drive my POS Dodge Neon to the gate and hike in.

This guy had only fired a rifle once before, but had bird hunted a lot. He had never killed any big game. I told him i would I let him use my rifle.
Hunted on Thursday, seen a bunch of elk, a bunch of does, and one tiny spike. I didnt want him to shoot that, and he didnt either. Thursday ended and we had fun. Went down on Friday, seen a bunch of does. Decided to check one last clearcut. One the last bend on top of a hill, we snuck around a corner and this deer was standing in the middle of the road on a log landing. When I saw the deer, he looked like a medium sized 3 point. I said 3 times really fast "Shoot that deer!" The deer saw us and ran over a hill, my friend ran after him. We ran about 75 yards and he spotted the deer ghosting across a hillside. He shot at the deer on the run and hit him. My friend shoots again and misses. I made my friend lay down, pull out the legs on the bipod and get steady. The deer ran real hard out to about 150 yards and stood there, looking around.
By this time I realize how big the buck is, One of the biggest blacktails I have seen on the hoof.  Then my friend cant find him in the scope. I try to stay calm, but there is a huge buck standing at 150 yards, and he cant find him in the scope! I actually layed down next to my friend and looked down the barrel and got him lined up. He found the deer in the scope and made a great shot and killed him. We ended up boning the deer out and packing him back to the Dodge Neon and putting him in the trunk. It was really cool seeing someone else, so excited. I enjoyed that. The deer was 17" wide. A 4 point with one eyegaurd. He had some of the longest tines I had seen on a buck. And we didnt even have to road hunt to get him! I erased faces and landmarks from the pics, so you guys stay out of my spots!
