Loaded for Bear
« on: May 07, 2008, 03:46:03 PM »
Picked it up my newest AHR Big Game Rifle 9,3x62mm yesterday afternoon.
Ed and Wayne really went the extra mile to put this rifle together for me on short notice (2 months).

AHR synthetic stock (McMillan)
Worked over CZ 550 Double Square Bridge Action
AHR Trigger
AHR 3-Posi Safety
22" SS 1-14 Lilja
NECG Masterpiece Banded Front Ramp with Ivory Bead
NECG Masterpiece Fully Adjustable Rear Sight
Metal Gunkoted
Talley QD Rings
Kahles Helia C 1.5-6x42mm #4A

With four (4) 286gr. Nosler Partitions in the belly it tips the scale at 9lbs 9.8oz

I hope to break it in proper next week as I'll be heading to Saskatchewan for bear.

Interesting choice, Any particular reason you went with the .366 cal bullet?

'cuz I'm a rifle loony!  :P

Lighter weight rifle and still softer on the shoulder than the H&H, but game animals won't feel the difference!

I built one last year on a factory CZ550 FS and sold it. Regretted it afterwards as it really is a fun cartridge. I typically shoot either 286gr. NP or 250gr. TSX on game, but may play with the 320gr. Woodleighs. The 286gr. PRVI is great for plinking and varmints.

Yes, it's an excellent choice for large PG. Some African countries allow it's use for DG.

A little info on the round.
The 9.3x62mm is ideal for eland, zebra, giraffe and wildebeest, and most who hunt in Africa consider it a viable all-around cartridge comparable to the .338 Winchester Magnum, the .375 H&H Magnum and the .404 Jeffery. The 9.3x62mm has taken cleanly every dangerous species on the continent, and is the minimum legal cartridge for "big 5" in many African countries. The 9.3x62mm is considered adequate for European and North American game that may become dangerous, such as feral hogs and the great bears. Sambar hunters in Australia are turning to the 9.3x62mm, the deer hunter's favourite rifle has changed due to the Howard (Federal) Government's ban on self-loading rifles (1994), a great many Sambar hunters were well catered for by the various makes of self-loading rifles that were available in 30-06 and like calibres, when the self-loaders were banned there was a buy-back and suddenly thousands of deer hunters were looking for bolt action rifles that delivered one shot knockdown power on Sambar deer, the 9.3x62mm calibre has proven to be well up to that task and now rifle manufacturers are including the calibre in their standard model lineup (Sako is a good example) and most gunshops carry factory loads in packets of 20 rounds although the price is still high at about $35.00 Aus per 20 compared to 30-06 at about $25.00 Aus per 20.

Cool rifle!  I like unique cals like that.  Sounds like it'd be a great Africa gun.

Curious about the CZ action you put in it.  What can you tell me about it?

Just your basic CZ550 action which they blueprinted, squared and trued.

More specifically what made you choose that action?  I'm not real familiar w/ CZ firearms nor have I seen anyone use 1 of their actions in a custom before.
