What's Your Best Gun Deal(s) Ever?
« on: February 03, 2011, 01:10:25 PM »
I'll start off...

1.  A few years ago, I bought a brand new Win 70 Coyote (stainless/heavy barrel) in .25 WSSM with a new Sightron SII 3-12x42, 5 boxes of Win Supreme ammo, and gun case for $300.00.  Bought it from a guy who was about to claim bankruptcy and needed some quick cash.

2.  Traded my $230.00 MAK-90 (Chinese AK-47) for his $500.00 7 1/2" stainless .44 Mag Ruger Redhawk (in excellent condition) back in the early 90s.

My dad ended up with both guns.  :chuckle:

3.  A bull-barreled 5 1/2" Ruger MkII for $100.00.

4.  Stevens 200 in .243 Win for $199.99 from Wholesale Sports in CdA.

5.  Saginaw M-1 Carbine for $180.00 at the Pomona Gun show back in the early 90s.

Here is a couple of mine.

T/c contender I just posted about yesterday. 223 with a super 16 barrel" new the barrel alone is 330-350 on it all stainless and synthetic. With weaver base and rings and rifle stock as well. worth around 500-600 I paid 250.00 for it.

I also picked up another rifle that was around 3k for right at 2k That was a pretty sweet deal as well. Not going to say what rifle but your minds can wonder ;)

Then last year I picked up a MKII 338 win mag fired 5 times 99% condition for 300.00+ a few odd ball trade items just laying around the garage. Maybe worth 100.00 at most.

About 20yrs ago a friend and I bought an arm load of Sav. 99s from a pawn shop(8 total) and turned around and sold all of them most went for more than we paid for the whole lot.  We each kept a very collectabe one out of the lot. Mine was an 1899B in 25-35.   Along time ago 4 new Win 101s for $154 each and 2 Ithaca SKBv100 SxS foe $140 each.  I try to always keep enough money in the gun fund to jump on a deal as soon as I see one and then turn it asap if it isn't something I just have to have.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I've actually had a few pretty fair deals fall into my lap.

#1 Summer of '09 picked up a Colt Combat Commander with 2 clips in 90-95% condition for $250

#2 12 years ago or so picked up a sporterized 6.5x55 swede at a yard sale for $65, wife shoots sub MOA groups with it using cheapo silver box federals.

#3 Found a M1 carbine laying in the ditch on a skid road about 15 years ago.  Had a broken firing pin, bought a pin at a gun show for $12 and had it installed for another $30.  Had a buddy who is a cop run the serial numbers and it was never reported lost or stolen.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

I bought a .338 Win Mag Browning A-bolt Synthetic stock/stainless with boss in 04 for $575 brand new.  It was a business that was closing.  The only reason I bought it was for Alaskan moose/bears.

Free.  I have at least 6 pistols/shotguns/rifles that were given to me.  As far as paying, I would have to say the single shot 10 gauge I got from a friend of my dad's for $40.

Bought a minty Buckmark Micro, spotless with original box 2 yrs ago for $125.
Bought a perfect Ruger 77/22 Magnum with bull stainless barrel and laminated stock, professional trigger job, 8 boxes of ammo and a Swift Premier 6-18X scope for $300.
Traded the rifle for a $300 credit on a 1911 I still have, sold the ammo for $8/box, and the scope rides on one of my 22lr's right now and is excellent.
Piece de resistance....5 yrs ago a buddy was funding an expensive fishing rod habit and selling guns. Annother buddy wanted an airweight SW gun.
I bought a perfect SW 642 with a nice Kramer pocket leather holster AND a clean 686-3 4inch for $600.  sold the 642 for $400, sold the Kramer leather for $75, I have a wonderful 686-3 with original wood grips and a Hogue combat grip for an outlay of $125.

I have another and don't want to share too much, but owned a shotgun for 15 minutes and doubled my money ($400)

The best as far as value were the free guns of course...  The best deal when paying was a .38 S&W Model 36 and a 1950's NEW IN THE BOX!! Winchester Model 94, both for only $250.

Saw my neighbor headed to the car with a cased rifle.  Asked him if he was going shooting.   He said he was headed to the pawn shop to sell some guns.   They offered him:
  *  $125 for a Model 700 Safari Grade 375 H&H with 3/9 Leupold and fancy sling (shot less than 10 times in mint condition)
  *  $100 for a model 70 youth in 234 hunted with once
  *  $50 for a beat up 670 in 270 with an old 4X weaver
  *  $75 for a Ruger 9mm pistol, nickel plated I think, and nearly new

I told him he was getting jobbed and offered to take them and sell them.   He didn't want the hassle, he only wanted them out of the house.  he finally offered me the ultimatum:   Pay him what the pawn shop would, or he'd go pawn them.

Needless to say, I made room in my safe.

Hey, anybody in the market for a 375 H&H magnum......... 8)

i ran a pawnshop for 6 1/2 yrs, had an atf agent call me last year and tell me that he was confused how a co worker and i could possibly of bought 400 or so guns and whatdid i do with mine. he had done  an audit on the shop and kept finding 4473 with mine and tims name on them. the best one of all time was through a series of trades i had little money in, i got to order a custom rifle of my choice. my choice, weatherby accumark 7mmwby, christensen arms barrel, sworovski 4x16 30mm tube, timney trigger, jeweled bolt, mcmillan stock. i still have that gun. i figure i have around a grand in it of my own money. p.s if you have questions about how pawnshops work, not the tv crap, let me know!

If you've got a moment, please start a thread about that. I'm sure there are many here that would like to be enlightened. I hit the shops around here once in a while just to see what's available. Most shops seem to want top dollar for guns. Blows me away to see the same ones in the case after a whole year. I've picked up some good air nailers in the last few years. I recently saw a couple Ruger pistols and a 10-22 that they guy wanted as much as Walmart did for new ones. Granted, the wally world ones are the new plastic, and his was an older metal one, but it was quite beat up. Seems like they really try to double their money on guns.

I traded a Ruger 10-22 straight across for an original 1882 vintage Colt SAA 44wcf, 2 boxes of 44wcf ammo and a pair of original eagle SAA Colt grips. 8)

p.s if you have questions about how pawnshops work, not the tv crap, let me know!

It would be great if you could fill us in on that on another thread. I have seen beat up old rifles at the pawn shop that are at or above the price of a new one from a box store. Seems to be that way on tools and optics as well. I have yet to find a good deal at a pawn shop and not for lack of trying.

I like the family heirloom ones passed down the best. :hello:

I would have to agree with this. My dad gave his Winchester Model 12, 12 gauge.

My brother and I also both received muzzle loaders this way, I got my uncles TC and my brother got our dad's friends, don't remember what exactly it is. Both of them have daughters that weren't interested in hunting, so giving us their guns allowed them to get new ones.

An almost new Remington 700 .223 rem stainless laminate, 26" heavy barrel and a leupold 3-9 VX1, bought it from a co-worker who needed money, $250.00
I have a 6.5-20 Nikon on it now and the VX1 is on another rifle. He hadn't had the gun 2 months when I got it.

#2 12 years ago or so picked up a sporterized 6.5x55 swede at a yard sale for $65, wife shoots sub MOA groups with it using cheapo silver box federals.
Just read this entire thread and this is the one that makes me really chuckle.

Anyhow, was on the prowl literally for years for a S&W M13 3" round butt .357 Mag "FBI Gun."  The place where I bought it had priced it as a 4", which were a dime a dozen back then.  Got a $400 gun for $165.  :IBCOOL:

I was hanging out at a pawn shop talking to the guy behind the counter and another guy overhears me say that I love old Remington's.  He tells me he has an old Remington that he cant find the parts for, and if I want it I can have it.  I asked if he had checked Numrich, he said he had.  We arranged for me to get the gun and it was a Nylon 66.  All it was missing was the magazine follower and plug assembly $20 with shipping from Numrich.  I know it is not as exciting as some of your deals, but that is the best deal I have gotten.
There's a reason they call it hunting, not killing.
