Banding Ducks with the Yakama Nation
« on: June 15, 2007, 09:09:20 PM »
FYI for those especially on the east side. You dont have to be a WWA member to attend but it would be a great time to join ;)

================================
2007 Yakama Nation Work Party Schedule

First, pardon what I would call the short notice of this outing/work party.

The schedule is as follows: June 30 & July 01; the work party will be concentrate on trap construction, July 14 & 15; the work party will be centered on trapping & banding of birds.

As in past years, the leader of this event will be Yakama Nation Biologist Tracy Hames.

The Yakama Nation has an excellent RV & campground in Toppenish. You will be responsible for your own reservations. However, Tracy has been able to get WWA members & families an excellent discount in previous years. (I recommend carpooling and tent or teepee rental for the guys who make this trek.) The accommodations include: TV, computer hook-up, sauna, jacuzzi, pool, outdoor play areas, a putting green,  theater, restaurant, library & museum.

Anyway, here’s their website: http://www.yakamanation.com

   (note the spelling or you may have a difficult time on-line)

Those members who have brought spouses and or children in the past have had a very rewarding experience. The youngsters get a tremendous learning experience from this adventure.

Last year, Tracy (an avid waterfowler himself) also provided information on upland & waterfowling areas to the attendees. Further, last winter Tracy invited WWA work party members to join in a hunt on tribal lands during the height of waterfowl migration.

Yes, I know gas is $3.00+ a gallon; but I see this as an investment. We get to give back to the resource. The kids get the opportunity for some exciting hands-on nature appreciation. The WWA gains credibility with the Yakama Nation and we gain credibility statewide as an organization that gets in the trenches to do our part (not an organization that just writes a check). And, the Yakama’s and Tracy get some labor to further enhance the bird & fowl populations on tribal lands.

I would not only really appreciate your turning out…… but also e-mailing me if you plan to attend and the dates you plan to attend. Last year we had twenty members attend. Needless to say, if we don’t have a reasonable turnout, we may have to back out. On another note, I know of individuals who plan to attend for just one day also. I will hook you up to share costs if you want.

Anyway, please e-mail me with your yea or nay a.s.a.p.. A reminder will come out in the newsletter and we will cover this item on our June meeting agenda at the SUMNER SPORTSMAN’S CLUB  on the 28th.

Best Wishes,

Jim Cortines

PM sent. What sorta stuff did you do last year? Did you actually get to band a bird? That would be pretty cool.
