a buddy of mine invited me to go to moses this summer for bow fishing. i was wondering if i could use my hunting bow or should i get a new bow for just bow fishing?

You can, but I would set up a diffrent low poundage bow for it.
I bought a old bow from a pawn shop, gave it a custom paint job, and set it at 45#s .
I dont have to worry about hurting it and it works great.

My husband and I each use regular bows.  His is actually a pretty nice custom one a Wildfire XP, but it was the only left handed bow they had.  Mine is just a little Browning.  Doesn't even have a draw weight.  He bought his and I went one weekend to just row our boat, but after one day of "trying it" I was hooked.  We have a setup with the following reel combo.  

Don't forget polarized sunglasses.  You'll need them.

I've shot them with my hunting bow and now have a cheep craigslist bow dedicated for bowfishing.. 2 reasons I have a lower poundage for the carp bow. I hold longer and shoot more at one time.. second reason is i shoot a lot of carp in the creeks and Coulees around there and got some grit in my hunting gear  not so good.. the old PSE nova for my carp rig has plastic coated cables so it can handle it more, not to mention i got a bow, case, arrow rest, site and a bunch of aluminum arrows for $75 tack on another $50 for my bowhunting kit and I'm in it $125

thanks for the input!! im gonna get another bow for bowfishing. what is the best setup i could have? i have polarized sunglasses, and will bring them

Hey welcome to the addiction!!! You can use any bow, but the lower draw weights are nice and you can shoot them all day long. My 2 are 55 and 68 but my hunting bow is 83lbs. I have bows for my clients from 30#-50lbs. Here is a great ready to go combo for not a whole bunch of $. Scott is the man and can get anything you need. here is the link to his place and the setup I am talking about. If you want to go hardcore pick up a Oneida osprey If the carp shooting is good, you will burn yourself out with a 60+ bow. Hope this helps. Any question always feel free to ask on here or pm me

I have learned over the years, you def want something around 45 -50# pound pull with 80% let off. A lot of guys like to shoot less let off or none at all but Somtimes you have to hold full draw for a while expecially if you are trying to shoot 2 fish at the same time.  The retreiver to me is the best reel off all time for bowfishing!

dont waste your money on a cajun spool you will upgrade after your first trip at least i did and so did three other buddys this year was my first year and im hooked building a deck for my boat right now actually just be warned you are going to be hooked everyone i took this year was thinking it was stupid until they started shooting at fish.  I cant wait for spring

Do you guys think a Ben Pearson recurve #3340 would be sufficient for bowfishing?  Looks like it's 35# draw weight.  Just would rather have another set up instead of using my hunting bow.  Found them on Craigslist for cheap and if it's a bow that will work I may pick one up.

Yes they will work, If they don't have sight holes on it. Then you can get a tape on reel mount or just mount a older style drum reel on it. Lots of kids and women in my boat shoot fish with 25-40lb bows. They work great, better from a boat when you can get a better angle on the fish. That way the arrow penetrates the water better and deeper. If you need any gear help or have questions please feel free to ask and pm me if you would like.
