Pelt seal?!
« on: February 09, 2011, 12:12:38 PM »
Ive looked all around the stupid F&G website, tried calling only to get transfered to numerous automated systems so... Anyone know the times the F&G are at the Puyallup hatchery on the weekends to seal hides? Ive done it before, but I swear it was on a Saturday. I searched the forum and someone posted they were there the first two Sundays of the month at ten in the morn. Anyone confirm?
Thanks

Well finally got impatient and fell for the 15 minute hold. After starting with the hunting division, stupid lady acted like she had zero clue what I was talking about she said she'd transfer me to fishing since I mentioned the Puyallup hatchery :bash: Before I could say WAIT! and explain further I had some guy answering "fisheries!" He basically made me out like a dumb ass wondering why I'd call fisheries but then transferred me to Enforcement before I could again explain the the idiot lady transferred me yadda yadda yadda. Anyway, for those interested apparently they no longer meet at the hatchery in Puyallup. I'm now waiting for a call from a gamie to schedule a time to meet.

No kidding. It seems its easier for them to pass it on to another department rather than try to be helpful. Still haven't heard from a warden yet.

Not to poke, but what's the hurry?  You have plenty of time to get it sealed.  Sealing has always been a hassle, but never to the point of getting too angry about it.  I'd leave a couple messages at your regional offfice, or notify the dispatching agency for your WDFW officers in the area.  Do it once a week, and eventually, they will get back to you.   Make them come to your house or place of interest to seal the cat, whenever it's convenient to you.    I know it seems like a super pain in the ass, but that's the way the tide rolls. :twocents:

Freezer space ;) No, not really, I just don't like to leave em in the freezer too long.

They're fine in the freezer for a lot longer than most would think.  Even if the ears, mouth, and paws are exposed.  I've stacked cats for several years until the market went up, and there was never a slippage or any other issue.  As for a lifesize or rug, I might be a little more concerned, but wouldn't hesitate leaving it in the freezer for at least 6 months. :twocents:

Apparently about the same as the requirement to by a hunting license.
It really makes you wonder what the qualifications are to get a job in a WDFW office is.....a pulse?

...........and speak spanish and some english, right !!!

Mandatory Reporting:
All hunters must report their hunting activity
(whether they harvest a cougar or not) using the
toll-free quota hotline (1-866-364-4868). Hunters
who harvest a cougar must notify the department
within 24 hours of kill (excluding legal state
holidays) and provide the hunter’s name, Wild ID,
date and Game Management Unit of kill, and sex
of animal. Permit hunters who purchased a cougar
transport, but did not hunt or harvest a cougar must
report their cougar hunting activity by April 10, 2011.
The raw pelt of the cougar (with proof of sex
naturally attached) must be sealed by an authorized
department employee within five days of the
notification of kill. Any person who takes a cougar
must present the cougar skull in such a manner
that teeth and biological samples can be extracted
to an authorized department employee at the time
of sealing. Call a Regional Office (see page 11) to
make arrangements to have a cougar checked.

Page 58 hunting regs

Pelt Sealing Requirements:
Successful hunters must contact a WDFW office within
20 days of the close of the hunting or trapping season to
schedule a hide sealing appointment. The skull and hide
(both non-frozen) must be presented so that teeth and
biological samples can be taken. Leave proof of sex attached
to the pelt. No one may possess an open WDFW bobcat seal
unless it has been cut by a licensed taxidermist or fur dealer
who has received and invoiced the pelt for processing.

Hunting regs are not just for emergency T.P.

Seriously, always call a regional office.  Regional staff deal with these types of questions regularly.  I really am not sure about Olympia but it is likely you will get someone who know very little because they do not deal with it.

Ah, unfrozen is the key word, if you cant get anyone in western washington then take it to yakima, they are there on saturdays. the sooner you get it to the taxidermy the better, dont listen to the BS.

Last year when when I got a cat, I called region 5 office in Vancouver, and she said I could bring it by anytime.  So I thawed it out one evening when I was knew I going to be down that way the next day, and just stopped by the office.  It was no big deal, it was around 10 am and I was the only non WDFW person there.

 :chuckle:
Yeah, after a woman at F&G explained to me they don't do it at the Puyallup hatchery anymore, two days later an officer called me. Guess where he was? Yup, the Puyallup hatchery. He called me at 9 a.m. Apologized for the late notice and taking two days to get back to me. Told me they are there the first and last Saturday of the month. I was busy last Saturday, so I have it marked on the calender to head that way at the end of the month. Sheesh!

The Madatory Reporting only requires those that are hunting with a PERMIT(i.e. hound hunting), to report their results whether successful or not.  It is so WDFW can keep track of the harvest quota.

For the rest of us the sealing of the pelt acts as a harvest report.  As long as we contact the regional office with in 72 hours of harvest then we have done our part.
