My Bow weight was 42 lbs when I started bowhunting in 82. Smokey set me up with xx75 2013s and cut on impact Bear Broad heads that he sharpened to a point. With in the first year I had shot a big Rosevelt 4x4 bull, Reccord book bear and mule deer. I've worked up to 50 lbs and stayed at that and am shooting a 400 grain arrow tipped with a 125 grain cut on impact broadhead.  3 things will make you a successful bowhunter, practice , scouting and keeping the shots within 40 yards., If you're thinking about getting back into bowhunting catch one of the Bpwhunter Education classes taught in the state, they're fun and educational!

In my opinion guys that are big about speed have ego issues. If your bow and arrows are legal to hunt with in WA state your not going to be shooting over 300fps. The difference in speed between 60 and 70 pounds is not enough to worry about. Speed does not kill animals shot placement does. A bow that shoots 290 fps is just as deadly as a 50 pound longbow if the arrow is put in the pocket. :twocents:

Thanks for all the advice. I just got a 45-60 lb Martin Pantera. So now I'm just wondering how many pins my sight should have. I'm thinking 4 is enough? I'd probably want a 50 yard pin but won't use if for hunting. When I hunted with a bow in the past I always considered 40 yards my max range. I don't think things will be any different with this bow.

I would get a sight that has as many pins that you can put in the window. You said your max range is 50, so when hunting dont shoot past 50. But if you practice at 70 or 80 that 50 yard shot becomes alot easier and your groups are better.

I really like a 4 pin sight.  I shoot with a 5 pin Spott Hogg but have another bow with a 4 pin Apex.  The Apex is a really nice sight for the money.

I like to sight my first pin in at 30yds and go 10yd increments from there.

I shoot a copper john dead nutz sight with four fiber optic pins.  I love it, very uncluttered in my opinion.  When I practice I will shoot out to 70 yards even though I only have a pins out to 40.  You just back count the pins and will be surprisingly accurate.  That being said, when you dorp back to 50 yards, the shots seem easy.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

GoldTip,  funny you should say that- I just got a Copper John Dead Nuts 3-pin sight off eBay for $15. And this is brand new. I couldn't pass it up. I thought it would work to start with anyway and if I want to change later to something with more pins, I'm not out much money.

Now all I need is an arrow rest, a release, and arrows. I already have the rest picked out (I think). It's a Trophy Taker for $50 on ebay. But I'm waiting a bit on that for my bank account to recover from the purchase of the bow.   :chuckle:
