Purchased the elkhorn!
« on: February 17, 2011, 09:03:24 AM »
Picked up the CVA Elkhorn yesterday! My Dad and I went in on the riffle and are going to start out with this muzzleloader. We are planning on getting another riffle either the same muzzleloader or the Bighorn depending on how the elkhorn shoots.

Here is our setup so far,let me know what you all think.

Muzzleloader - CVA Elkhorn
Powder - Hodgdon Triple seven
Bullets - Barnes TMZ 290 grains
Caps - RWS #11 caps
TC - bullet starter

I am excited to start a new adventure!

Where did you end up buying it at? Did it come with all three nipples or did you have to purchase them?

Congrats. Welcome to the world of muzzle loading. No turning back now. What powder did you decide to go with?
It's not the size of the trophy that make's it a trophy.

You may just be one person in this world. But you may be the world to just one person.

I can't thank you all enough for steering me in the right direction,it really helped norrow down my choices!

Where did you end up buying it at? Did it come with all three nipples or did you have to purchase them?

I purchased it at the Federalway wholesale sports for $239. It came with the 209 primer installed and the musket and #11 nipple also. It also came with all the tools to change out the 209 breach plug and it was very simple to do.

Congrats. Welcome to the world of muzzle loading. No turning back now. What powder did you decide to go with?

Oh I forgot to mention that. I went with the triple seven and plan on using 100 grains.

My elkhorn came stock with the 209 breech plug(not legal in WA),you have to change to the breech plug that accepts #11 and musket caps (should have came with the riffle) the #11 is the smaller nipple and can shoot #11 and #11 magnums. The larger nipple is for musket caps.

Lots of info here http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,70916.0.html

They're not better, but they're not worse either. They're just different. The musket caps are "hotter" so COULD be more reliable in igniting your powder charge. But not necessarily. If your powder is wet I'm not sure one would do any better than the other. The musket caps are easier to handle because they're bigger so that might be an advantage. But if you use a capper with the #11's then their smaller size isn't really a hindrance at all. One advantage of the #11's over the musket caps is that they make a better seal against the nipple and I think for that reason water will not get in as easily, and if you want you can use wax to seal around the edge of the cap to make it completely waterproof. I don't believe that can be done with the musket caps.
