mixing geese dekes
« on: June 26, 2008, 06:41:13 AM »
So i have heard and read mixed opinions on mixing canadian and snow geese decoys (floating dekes), i was just curious what some of your experiences/opinions are on this.
My goose fleet is only 6 floating canadian geese-which i always have some mallard dekes out as well, and i was curious to adding some snow geese dekes because i saw quite a few of them last season. We could turn them and make them circle, but no commitment-(except for a skybuster that was with us >:(), but i was wondering if some snow dekes would draw them in all the way with such a small spread (6 candians-6 snow) or would it look fishy and spook em away?

I don't know if hunting over water changes things but when hunting fields in the midwest we used both dark and lights together.  Again, water may make a difference but 6 snow decoys isn't likely to entice em.  Generally they are in massive flocks that require dozens.  My inclination is that it won't hurt anything but I'm not sure it will make much of a difference.... would likely depend on how many snows you're trying to pull in.

Thanks for the input Intruder! It was weird we were down near Elma, duck hunting expecting to see some canadian geese, but low and behold there were steady flocks of snow geese flying right up the river, dont know where they were going but they were definetly snows, there would be the high flying flocks determined to keep flying then there were numerous smaller flocks that would drop down anywhere from a dozen or so in size and land in private property very near to us. Yeah i wish i could have a larger goose spread but it would be too expensive 4 water dekes. I am thinkin bout buyin a flag, see if i cant catch their eyes with that as well.
