Looking for advice on selling a rifle
« on: February 21, 2011, 03:10:58 PM »
I got lucky at the Seattle Sportsman's Convention and won a rifle.  I know this is a strange concept, but it is a rifle that I don't really need.  I haven't seen the actual rifle because the winner has a choice and I will have to get up to Kesselring's to pick it up.  It appears to be a Weatherby Vanguard in 300 Weatherby.  I also get the choice of a $300 in store credit.

What I really want is a left handed rifle for my son.  I have been looking at a Remington 700 SPS left handed youth model in 7mm-08.

How much hassle is there in selling a new-in-box rifle?  Would the hassle and cost to sell it make it worth just taking the $300 in-store credit?  Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd say take the $300 in store credit. You can probably have them find you just about any lefty you set your mind to. Sure, you may get more than the three bills but then you have to hassle with selling the rifle. Take the credit and you can start shopping with a known starting point of available funds.

I think that rifle sells for around $400 at most retailers.

Might not be worth the hassle.

Yeah, I'm with Lowedog and H2Ohunter. Vanguard at this place is $438.

That might be a little harder cal to sell as well. I say 300 store credit myself. Put it towards the gun for your son. :IBCOOL:

Hmm...  Kesselrings will see ya comin!

Don't like what they have to offer as a gift, then they'll 'sell' you something different.

I bet they can do this though. I'd go with the in-store credit.

I'm not sure you'll find a Savage on the shelves of Kesselrings, but they may order one for you.

I agree with most of the posts that recommend getting the store credit. I'd think twice about the 'youth' model gun though unless you've got another son to hand it down to. They outgrow those youth models awfully fast but can grow into a standard length stock even faster IMO.

One suggestion on the lefty for your son, I have a like new left hand 700 BDL stock that a 270 came out of.  If a BDL 270 interests you (or him), I'll give you this stock and you can cut it down to fit him now.  Then when he grows back into the original stock, just do the switcheroo.  That stock would probably work with a 30-06 too, but for sure not the short action of the 7-08.

(pm me if you want the stock)

We made it to Kesselring on Saturday and found a used left handed Remington 700 BDL in 270 Win with a 3x9 Redfield scope.  We also picked up reloading dies and cases to go with my jug of Trail Boss powder.  With a cut down stock and low recoil loads we should have something he can start shooting off the bench and grow into.

This is a bad cell phone picture, but you can probably make out his smile at least.
