Need help deciding what new 270 I should buy......
« on: February 23, 2011, 08:55:05 PM »
Some of you have seen my story about my 270 Win blowing apart.

Well now I am in the market for a new one, I would like to keep it under $700-$800.  I am really struggling with what to buy.

My short list so far is:

Tikka T3

Browning X or A bolt

Winchester Model 70

I also have a line on an older Remington 700 BDL in awesome condition.

Your input would be helpful, I am leaning towards the Winchester, but there are so many good posts about the Tikka T3, its hard to not look at it.

Thanks for your help!

Take a look at the Howa/Vanguards. My Howa 1500 in .270 is a tack driver.

Browning A bolt. I don't like the safety on the model 70. Tikka I don't know anything about except they're light. But my A bolt has worked well for me for the 14 years that I've had it. And for about $25 you can get a new spring for the trigger that will turn it into a nice 2 1/2 to 3 lb trigger.

I like all those gun and the choice is tuff. We have a 270 win tikka that my wife has hunted with for a few year and killed a few 8) big game animals with in more then one country. It drives tacks and in the 270 win the recoil is not bad, even for a lighter gun. She has now stold one of my fancy 700 in 270wsm :chuckle: My brother has shot more then a couple of bucks with the 270 win/tikka as well. So based on that I would say the Tikka :twocents:

My choice would also be the A-Bolt...the X-Bolt looks like a nice rig too.
I think those Tikka's are ugly but I also love my T/C Encores so that ain't saying much.
Those Browning rifles always seemed like good quality stuff to me.
The Remington 700's seem iffy for accuracy and I'd have to see the model 70. Not a big fan of the checkering you see on a lot of them. You've picked all good quality rifles so for me they have to have the cool factor. Stupid reason maybe but it is what it is.

I have all three (Tikka, Win Mod 70, Browning X Bolt).  I like them all.  The Tikka is the sleeper: less expensive, deadly accurate.  The Browning is the "nicest" of the bunch: good fit/finish.  My Model 70 is just plain good: accurate and reliable; it never lets me down.

If money and weight matter go with the Tikka.  If you can spend a bit more, see which of them you like having in your hands the best.

I sure like Browning A-bolt. I shoot one in 270win and it is just awesome to me! The fit and feel for me is just hard to beat. I really like my Weatherby dressed in beautiful walnut, but the composite stalker 270 A-bolt is surly my big game work horse!

If I wanted a pretty gun, I'd buy a Browning.
If I wanted lightweight and accuracy, I'd buy Tikka (I did, 3X)
Other two are not in the running.

I have the Tikka, a model 70 and a bunch of different Remingtons, they all shoot good and are similar quality.  I would recommend the Tikka over the other two just for the fact that you can get SS, synthetic and super lite weight for a good price and it shoots very good.

My A bolt composite stalker sure isn't pretty, but it's definitely accurate AND lightweight. Maybe not as light as the Tikka, but at 6 3/4 pounds, I wouldn't want it any lighter. Not sure why you think Brownings are "pretty" and are not accurate.  ???

Maybe I'll post up a picture so you can see how it's NOT pretty.   :chuckle:
