Thanks for everyone's input,

Now I need to add the price variable to 3 of them (all in 270):

Winchester Model 70 Walnut stock, blued barrel -- $599
Tikka T3 Lite Stainless - composite stock -- $549
Browning x bolt composite stalker - composite stock, blued barrel -- $699

More thoughts?

is the price for a new m70 off the internet or from a local shop? all the ones ive been seeing are around 700-900s if memory serves me right

These guys on the internet have the M70 for 599.00.   http://www.covecreekoutfitters.com/

Here's my input on the Tikka T3 lite SS 270 win:

My boyfriend had one for 2 years and he loved it; he was putting holes in holes at 100 yards with some hand loads and couldn't miss with it. He is probably one of the most dilligent cleaners I know; if he shot it, it was cleaned before taking his hands off it again. With no significant event, at about 1000 rounds through it, the gun had an odd change of performance... he couldn't get it to shoot tighter than 2 inch groups no matter what he changed: he used 3 scopes, 5 different loads including his hand load and 4 general boxed brands, and all over 2 inch groups. ALSO, when he changed bullet brand, the group would stay around 2 inches but moved horizontally and vertically up to 3 feet! We took it to a lisenced FFL dealer and gunsmith and he put a bore scope down the gun and couldn't find any damage or swelling. We contacted Beretta (sako's US dealer) 5 seperate times with no response. Rebarreling it at all estimates would cost almost as much as a brand new gun.

So what I took away from this: If you treat your Tikka very nice, you'll get 1000+ rounds through it just fine and it'll be a tack driver. Customer Service outright STINKS for the gun, though, and parts are extremely expensive. I think a clip is even $50+. They say you should be able to shoot 10,000+ rounds through it with no issue but knowing how well EyeGuard treated that gun I'm sure it was a barrel issue and not damage by user.

Just something to consider.

This being said, his replacement gun was a Sako A7 270 win Soft-touch. If you talk to the right folks, you can get one of those for mid $800's.

I always liked the A Bolt... and I've been drooling over this one for ages now:

If you get it I might have to come oogle over it. Just sayin'.  :chuckle:

Best of luck in your decision!

I'm a pretty dyed in the wool Model 70 guy, but I think I'd look pretty hard at a Remington M700 XPS.

Hirshey, That 25th anniversary Browning is very sweet!  That would be a great choice!

I've been watching it pretty closely. The guy has had it on there for about 4 months at least but is pretty firm on the price. If it were a flat $700 I would have made room in my budget for it... but I just don't have the extra $100 floating around right now.  :chuckle:

I know it isn't a composite stock but walnut is pretty lightweight as far as wood is concerned.

My guess is that you have already purchased your .270. But for others that are asking the same question here's my recommendation. The Weatherby Vanguard is consistently rated as the best value for a quality hunting rifle. The sub-MOA accuracy is tested and the target is sent to you for verification. Prices range from $500 to $1000 depending on the configuration. My Weatherby Vanguard .270 is on the low-end of the price spectrum but performs flawlessly. I consistently get 1" groups at 100 yards. I used it to take a nice 10 point Whitetail this past October and will now use the gun with a 100 Grain Sierra BT bullet for coyotes this summer.

i'm wondering what he bought too. he picked a good price range with lots of options.

More options if he hasnt still based on his 700-800 max price range.

CZ550 I own two and they shoot great even with cheap ammo. both of mine came with the set trigger which is great for supreme accuracy.

Sako A7, Tikka's classier brother generally including palm swell and they make their actions more specified to each cartridge size in order to provide the most reliable ammo feed.
http://www.eurooptic.com/sako-a7-rifle-synthetic-stainless-270-win-jrsz118.aspx

Weatherby Vanguard, mentioned earlier but heres a link. Father in law has one of these in 300 win and it shoots great.
http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/36_136/products_id/69123

Kimber 84,  a slight bump in price but probably one of the best built rifles out of america. One of the only american companies still producing a forged receiver. these suckers are super light weight and shoot like a dream.

Savage weather warrior, Forged action, very accurate, accu-trigger(super sweet) and you can change barrels and calibers between anything in the standard cartridge range in your garage for fairly cheap.

Weatherby SMOA. when weatherby test fires their rifles, the ones that shoot exceptionally well are set aside and given the name SMOA. None of this buying a ruger or remingtion or winchester and hoping it shoots decent.   :puke:

LOL, insert most manufactureres and you would be also correct. I have shot two Kimbers that were not steller performers, concidering the price paid for them.

I got a Browning X bolt in 338 and I love it! One of the best rifles I have ever had.  :twocents:

Thanks for the post, I should of closed the loop with ya all, I ended up buying the Winchester Model 70 in .270.  I put a 3-9 Leupold on it. I bought from one of the places who advertise on GunBroker.  Got a sweet deal on it ($599).

I have gotten out about 4 times, although I am still breaking it in, the gun is a tack driver.  The last two times out I could put a quarter over 3 shots.

Thanks again!

I can't believe there are not any Savage users in here. With the recent additions such as the accu-trigger & accu-stock, these rifles are exceptional shooting machines for the money.

One of the best innovations of the Savage rifles is the barrel nut system.  In less than 5 minutes, I can convert my Savage 300 win mag, to a 30-06, 270, 308, 7MM Mag or any other chambering.  The only tools required: a nut wrench, vise, go gauge and another barrel (might need to change out the bolt head depending on the caliber).  You can easily get factory barrels for less than a $100.

Give serious consideration to the Savage rifles; I wish I had investigated them before buying my custom rifles.  They are every bit as accurate but only a fraction of the cost

Nothing more versatile out there and they are insanely accurate with my hand loads....oh and they are made in the USA
