Why would someone pic a 340 Wby over a 338 RUM?  Serious question.  Seems like RUM brass would be less expensive, but ballistics has got to be about the same or better with the RUM.........

Here is the difference between the two curly. The 340wby has better ballistics then 338rum.

Brass:
340wby 2.00each
338rum 1.20each

340WBY-250g nosler part    100y+1.6/300y -6.9/400y -20.0/500y -40.4
energy                               4176         3120        2678        2286
fps                                    2743         2371        2197        2029

338 Rum 250g nosler part    100y+1.7/300y -7.6/400y -22.0/500y -44.7
energy                               3888       2807          2363         1977
fps                                    2647       2249          2064         1887

The load data that I looked at shows the RUM at about 2,900 fps........ :dunno:   The 338 Win mag can get around 2600 or so with the 250 gr.

Was that 2900fps at 100 yards?

NO.  I didn't pay attention close enough.  I thought the 1st column was Muzzle Vel.  But in any event, the WBY should be around 100 fps slower than the RUM.

Carp, you should really look into a 338 EDGE if you are wanting real long range performance.  Link

Good article on the Edge........ Link

Yeah, thats intresting. I was looking online, at a site I use a lot and got the data that I posted. But when I look threw the online loads threw hodgdons the RUM is faster :dunno: Intresting. I will have to play with my manuals and see what I can find out. That 340 I am looking at is kinda a pipe dream. If the guy does the the deal with me, I will be super excited. I will still be looking into another gun, regardless of what happens with the 340wby. I have been talking to the guy and should know more tonight keep your fingers and toes crossed :chuckle:

I have looked into the edge and the lapua as well. Thanks for the link curly, I had not seen that one before.

I was at my gunsmiths yesterday and he just finished an edge and was telling about it;s range. He even had some 300 hundred granin bullets loaded for it. Then a guy walked in with a lupa and they startedc talking about ballistics and it sounded like the edge held it;s own.

The edge and lapua do seem to be very close, from what I have been reading as well. Going to go dig out some of my reloading manuals
It has been awhile since I used any of them :chuckle: I already have loads for all my rifles that work well :chuckle: So I don't play with my manuals much. The one place already has the rifle I want, built and sitting there ready :'( Just having a hard time drop in huge money on it :'(

Well, I've been shooting my old 340 for 26 years now, and I've always had good luck with it.  Mine absolutely loves the old original barnes X bullets.  (They are getting harder and harder to find though!)

I've always reloaded for it, and where all my other rifles like to have their bullets seated to, or within .015"-.020" of the lands; the freebore on this Weatherby won't allow that, however, it will shoot groups with at LEAST three touching, at 100.  All of them under an inch.  (I have one target that I kept that is one ragged hole).  Don't know why this caliber seems to work with freebore, but none of my other ones will.

Another thing I've noticed about 340's... some kick like a mule, some don't, and I think it just depends on how well the stock fits you.  Mine isn't bad at all, but one day I put seven different loads through it, (35 rounds total, all of them 250gr.), and I could feel it the next day.  I would never consider putting a muzzle break on one.  If you are worried about the recoil, you will flinch.  That means you should drop to a caliber that you don't flinch with.

My next large bore will be either a 338 Lapua, or an Edge.

If I ever put together another long range rifle it will probably be a edge.
I seen mentioned a 30-378 or 300 RUM, I like the 300RUM but wouldn't waist money on a 30-387

:) I doubt it is legal for Africa for anything but Plains game, antelope, Most PH's and Countries require 375 minimum for any of the biggies.

Id always pick a Wby over a Rem any day. Most guys don't look at ballistics when comparing wby. They typically are always better when comparing makers. And cost? Does it really matter when you get into those mag cartridges? That's like spending 80 grand on your dream car then only putting regular unleaded gas in it because its cheaper. :twocents:

Some areas of Africa it would legal others it would not be, from my understanding. I know for a lot of the large game hippo/elephants etc they require a 375. But for Buff and the cats I am not sure. I know My high school math teacher used a 300wby for his leopard he shot :dunno: But I am by no means a expert on Africa. Just a gun I thought I would take if I ever go. I would take it and a 458 Lott :IBCOOL:
