340 Weatherby "ITS MINE NOW!!!" OH YEAH!!!
« on: February 24, 2011, 09:45:09 PM »
Was wondering if anyone is running one. I found one that is a good deal. I am just playing with the idea. But wanted some feedback on the cal. I know the basics, based on the 300wby necked up to the 338 take the .338 bullets. Have looked at load data, brass is pretty fair price, for a wby :chuckle: Bullets from 160-300grains, Just like the 338 win mag. Seems like from what I have found is you gain about 100-200fps over the 338wm with the 340wby. It is a gun with the larger bullets that is plenty enough for Africa and all other animals in between. With the 340wby I can shoot a 180grain bullet at 3400fps/225grain bullet at 3000fps/300grain bullet at 2600fps. Seems like a great gun to chunk big bullets and also be a very good long range cal with the lighter bullets. Sighted in 1" high at 100y its only 32" low with the 185g Barnes.

I have been looking into another long range gun. My 2 picks so far have been the 300rum and 30-378. Yes I reload everything! So when I found a gun I like the looks of, and at a fair price in the 340wby. It has got me to thinking. I would love to hear more feedback on this cal. As well as thought about it compared to the other picks I have.

Thanks Carp...

Buy it. I'm not a Weatherby fan but the .340 is a great caliber especially if you hand load. I shoot a .338 for elk etc. The .340's a hair quicker. You need a new gun.

Why would someone pic a 340 Wby over a 338 RUM?  Serious question.  Seems like RUM brass would be less expensive, but ballistics has got to be about the same or better with the RUM.........

There is a web site called american guns and you can click on rifles and the make and find all kinds of guns. I bought a 22-250 super varmit master weatherby on there last week and had it in like 5 days shipped to my local gun smith. They had stopped production on it but I looked for ever and finally found it on here. Mine came fron a dealer in Iowa called Bromleys he had a lot of weatherbys on there and prices.

Here is the difference between the two curly. The 340wby has better ballistics then 338rum.

Brass:
340wby 2.00each
338rum 1.20each

fps                                    2743         2371        2197        2029

338 Rum 250g nosler part    100y+1.7/300y -7.6/400y -22.0/500y -44.7

From what I have researched, the 340 weatherby is actually a better preformer from an accuracy standpoint than the 300 weatherby. I think the extra diameter of the bullet does better with the freebore that Roy put together.

If you really want a great expert opinion on it, call Dan Cowen.. Riflesmith in Renton. GREAT guy and REALLY knows a ton about well, all rifles.

If you are looking into another Long Range gun then I would also look into what BC you can get out of each caliber. I almost went 338 Lapua, then found I can reload a 300 RUM with 210 Bergers with a BC of 0.63.. they shoot 1" MOA out of my rifle.

I do not know if I woudl go 300-378.. That is just a TON of power for such a small 30 caliber bullet.

Agree! It is a ton of power! On a 30 cal bullet. its just crazy that you can shoot a 180g bullet sighted in 1" high at 100yards  and only be 27" low at 500yards :yike: Thats pretty sweet right there! Which is about 8" less drop then 300 rum with the same bullet.

Yea.. the cartridges are pretty scary looking too. I assume if you are thinking 300 378, you are looking at the Accumark? That is the only rifle I know chambered for it from the factory.

No, I won't by from weatherby anymore. I got into it with them one day and said no more. I will buy there guns used but not new. One of my fave guns is a weatherby CFP. This rifle will more then likely be a custom built rifle. That I end up with, no matter what cal.

Well, if that is the case.. then I would go with the 300-378.. although you will have to go with a muzzlebreak, which I am not a fan of.. but on its own a rifle like that would just kill a shoulder.

on another note.. do they make aftermarket muzzlebreaks that can be turned on and off like the muzzlebreak that savage offers?

I love my 30-378 with one exception.  I do not reload so I may be mistaken but I have heard people say the powder weatherby uses in the 30-378 cartridge is proprietary and not available to purchase with no other powder being able to match its performance.  It is for that reason I have heard that folks who reload would not be interested in the 30-378 due to not being able to load to the factory load performance.  Maybe I am way off base but my understanding none the less. Maybe two exceptions with the second being the 10k price tag because this was not a off the shelf 30-378.

Looking at Hodgdon's reloading data, they show the 338 RUM at about 150 to 200 fps faster than the 340 Weatherby.
