How are the NE whitetails doing(Winter kill)
« on: February 27, 2011, 06:31:05 PM »
How do you guys think the northeast whitetails are doing this winter? I was up the springdale hunters road about a month ago and saw 150 or so, they all looked healthy. What do you guys think?

Two weeks ago the white tails around Elokia Lake and the town of Valley looked exceptionally good. A week ago there were deer and tracks seen near Deer Park indicating they were coming back from wintering areas. Since the above sightings, we have receive 10 inches or more of new snow, wind to 35 mph, high temperatures in midteens and lows at minus 22, real temperature. We have a warm spell, with wind coming, then cold, below zero temperature, and more snow forecaste until the 15th of March. It is to early to say how they have made it through the winter, we could easily have a month or more of severe winter weather and possible snow cover well into April. Hopefully things will warm up.

Deer look good yet, I hope this deep freeze and snow storm ends in a few days. March can be the killer month, if spring breaks we are fine, if it's cold and snows the rest of the month, there could be an impact.

Tha only thing hurting the deer around the place in Republic are the coyotes.  They have been tearing the deer up this winter.

There are a lot less coyotes eating deer in Stevens County after the coyote contest. Last I heard over 150 were taken, not sure of the final tally, it ended yesterday.

Big warmup today, that is good, about 32 outside right now.

Dale,  How much snow is up that way? I'll be headed over to the cabin up by Waneta Crossing in a few weeks and I;m hoping to be able to drive in to the cabin.
Just one more day

Haven't been up to Waneta lately but the whole area has pretty open southern exposure, snow isn't too deep if you aren't on the wrong side of the hill or ridge.

All the deer I've seen out and about lately have been looking pretty healthy to me. From spokane up into colville at least. There's definitely still some winter weather in the wings, but we haven't really had an extended time period of really rough weather.. Like Hangfire said its been below zero for a few days and then back up in the 40's and even low 50's for a week after so any snow that we get melts at least most of the way off before we get any more accumulation ...

A WDFW officer practically begged me to start hunting "anywhere in GMU124" because the deer population was so high compared to the GMUs up north.  My $0.02 worth.

Going to be a tough year in that NE section this year.

Low was 27 last night so mild again. I heard there was a lot more snow out of this last storm to the south, but so far we have had much less than a foot in Colville. Sherman area had about 6 inches fresh yesterday, but winter ranges are not too deep with snow and deer still look good. If spring will break this month we will have had a moderate winter with not too much affect on game herds. That would mean a good fawn crop so we can start rebuilding the deer herd from 07 and 08 winters.

As someone else said, the coyotes have probably been harder on the deer than the winter so far.

I was at our property over the weekend in the Huckleberry and seen alot of deer in the lower elevations, not to many up were we are at yet (as expected) They looked to be in pretty good shape. Im still not seeing near the turkeys I was in the years past. I heard something about a coyote derby goin on, what was that all about? Hope they killed a bunch
