I think I recognise that work bench  :chuckle:
I love those rem 33's looking forward to meeting you tomorrow.
to alot of people these old war horses suck, but i have an addiction to em.
even rusted ones are fun to blast!

most fun i ever had at the range was with a $100 beater, man next to me with a $3000 rifle and probably that much in spotting gear too. saying what a pile of sheyite my old surplus rifles are, him not hitting the bull once at 100 yards with it all, me, no spotting scope, old 100 year old surplus ammo and open sights nail the target 1-oclock in the black.

Watching him huff and puff, putting his gear away pee-oed was the best time ever.

i cant sleep, too excited to get the rifle and start the transformation to .223, actually really stoked. i wanna go shoot it lol!

So tonight i tore the donor rifle apart, put everything in my container. then decided to use the rest of my Kleen Strip spray on finish stripper purchased at Home Depot.

Heres the before photo of the stock, has a textured finish. not really something i like so ultimately. i had to see what was Under it all.
heres what i started with

during the brushing and scraping of the stripping process

that stuff is nasty and sticks to everything be careful using it, wear nitrile gloves too.

I took the stock into the bathroom and bathed it good with warm water and dish soap. Let it sit for awhile and looked it over.
The bondo was bugging me so out came the carving & inlay tools.

Dont have a clue what the person with the bondo can was thinkng. the stock is a keeper. i wont be needing a new one anytime too soon, only a couple defects under the paint and body filler.

Nice tiger stripes hiding under all that paint & bondo.

bondo gone

I have a feeling this will be a very nice looking rifle when completed. I hope i do it all right and it shoots good also.
now to find me a steel buttplate to mount on the rear of the stock like it used to have. No more bondo for this old log.

I am actually really excited that the wood is in great shape! its a big surprize lol! I thought it would have been a butchered battle stock but i dont think thats the case here, this one was professionally sporterized at one time. now it will be touched by my magic, hope i do it justice.

I might have a steel butt plate.  I'm gone for a few days but when I get home I'll check.  Is it the kind that wraps around over the top of the stock.  With a mounting screw on top?

Cool tutorial----Thanks for sharing.
Gets me motivated to do one of my own. A hand-me-down 8x57, already semi-sporterized, but could use some stock work.

lazydrifter, yes, its supposed to have a wrap around screw on top plate on it. thanks for looking! an 1891, 1893 spanish plate or 1916 will work that i know of, not sure on any others

quadfire, they are alot of fun to work on, knowing a ifle that you made your own and making them all purty is awsome.

probably only the reciever, the barrel will be fitting just inside the stock tightly but free floated the complete length with a business card gap the entire length from the face of the reciever out.

someone in the past sanded down the left side of the butt alot, so the buttplate is alot narrower than its supposed to be, I may have to fabricate a custom one out of something...

Any clues on what would work, needs to withstand impacts from the ground if i drop it though.

I might have to plasti-weld a pice onto the top and mold it into the shape of the tang that goes over the top of the butt.

pretty sure i have a spanish 1916 buttplate.  if the butt has indeed been narrowed, just narrow the buttplate to match...  :dunno:

i would very much like to find a correct buttplate, but i have no funds to buy one.
wont for a while either, atleast until i get back to work again.

With the stock tip being weird on this rifle, i went outside to look around for a chunk of my smoker wood (cherry) to place on it and remove the knot with a dowel in it.
while i was out there i noticed the stick my dog used to chew on (Dayzey our 120-lb pitbull) before we had to put her down last week.
I think i am going to do my best to graft that branch in there instead of something else, i just hope i can keep a few of her chew marks in the wood and fill them with verethane then sand the filler flush with the wood as my own personal little tribute in her honor.
I really miss my dayzey.
