well today i removed the knot, keeping the style tip that was on it and only removed the bad area.

Hard part was matching up the chew toy to the hole i made.

dug the chew stick out of the shelf.

oops, cut stick too narrow, friggin fence on table saw moved.  :bash:

took it back outside and trimmed the other end.

2 ton epoxy time, put that in the dowel hole, and inserted a dowel, then slopped it all over each surface, then the surfaces of the chew toy.
pushed it together and clamped it. stuff sets fast, clamps dont need to be on there longer than 15 minutes.

clamps off

I will let this sit for a day or so, i should be able to start shaping it tomorrow afternoon, i am keeping the tip as it was, but i wanted to put that chew stick on the rifle somehow.
I may use more of it to cover the epoxy square holes on the side of the stock as well. just have to think up a plan on how.

I also made a template for the butt plate with cardboard.
I might make a cherrywood buttplate for this.

i did a little shaping and inletting of the action and barrel today.
I dont know if i am going to like how the barrel fits the channel in the stock, its awfully uneven from the last person that worked on this.
I might have to so some more laminating of wood materials to square it all up. not sure yet.
Maybe if i bed the whole barrel and then trim the glass bedding down instead of gluing wood in. the top of the rail will be painted brown anyhow.

the rear tang on the reciever also looks funny to me, the person before me sanded too much wood off, i might have to graft an elk antler on it back there to raise the stock surface there also.

But it looks like a gun again. here is what i did today.

ground off the bulk of the stick i put in the tip.

Action and barrel resting in the stock for a picture.

going to head up to my buddies and fill the barrel channel with epoxy then lay the action and barrel back in it all with two layers of 10 mil PVC plumbing tape on the steel and strap it in place, this will give a nice free float, bring all the over sanded areas in the barrel channel back to grade and then i will paint on a brown color on top of the stock to hide all the epoxy filler.
Will also do a re-bedding on the reciever as well to make is rock solid.

I will also somehow place an aluminum rod in the forestock for added strength to prevent warping.

AWSOME! Fits great! it was in the mailbox today.
I will find some screws for it at the gunshow this month and mount it with the correct ones.
Only needs a little bit of fitting and it will be on there for life.
Love my steel buttplates lol! Thanks again!

I didn't even think about the screws.  I'll check later today when I get home.  I might have those also.

I would grind it down & make it fit the wood.

did quite a bit of hand sanding to remove scratches and some surface rust that accumilated on the barrel and reciever over time.
worked it over with 320 wet dry cut into strips. old fashioned way but it does a nice job with a little effort and elbow grease.

have to get soe durafil or something to fill in the little pits in the reciever.
then sand the reciever all over again lol

tomorrow i think i will attack the too long lug bolt on the rear tang.

today i got bored and headed to my washing machine work bench again.

i taped two layers of 10mil pvc tape on the barrel, then applied a ton of car wax all over it (i do mean a ton too).
greased up the forward end of the reciever aswell just in case the goo flows down that way.

I used GOOP brand supermend for my filler as its a 1/1 mixture and allows plenty of time to dink around before it hardens.
after it cures overnight it can be drilled, tapped, machined and its also great for casting your own fishing lures with too. its impervious to amost all chemicals and waterproof too.
dont get it on anything that does not matter to you, once it hits it there forever.

i was only trying to fill in under the barrel so everything was even under there again, looks like i did the job perfect so far. its floated still from chamber to tip of the stock, so thats all that matters to me, will hit the action tomorrow.

I also skimmed the top of the reciever with the epoxy, i am filling in pitting that was there, i will fill the rest tonight before i hit the rack, tomorrow i will file and sand all the surfaces flush again and the action and barrel will be ready for duracoating in a week (or atleast 2 days), making sure i let the epoxy gas out before applying anything on top of it to prevent bubbles in the paint.

Have you had to do laundry since this project started? :chuckle:

I am loving it. Keep it coming. I really like the pics/tutorial.

lol! yeah, usually my wife will tell me she needs the work bench a couple hours ahead of the time she needs to wash stuff.
other than that i usually put all my stuff away every night.
really wish i had a heated garage ( or any garage for that matter) with a real workbench, but i do with what we have i guess.

It is kind of a pain to wok on stuff on it. but its a bench to work on.

well, tonight i fitted the buttplate to the stock, looks great despite the off center screw hole on the bottom, thats ok, maybe i can have it welded shut and just redrill a new one in the center of the plate.
I dont think its a big deal, gives it character i think.

Tomorrow, i will set in some more filler on the reciever, then find out where and how i can get the steel parts coated and baked to cure.
I will also be needing to bend the bolt handle and drill & tap the reciever for weaver mounts somehow also.
I think my buddy is asking his friend to see if he has time to help with that though.
I am happy with how its turning out so for. I think its looking quite well.

Wish i had a bunch of Coyote canine teeth. i would inlay them in the bad spot on the buttstock lol! one on each side.

hand polished the bolt today, what a pain.
Thank god for 600 grit paper and cardboard on my dremmel. hand got tired and used the dremmel in tight spots, avoided the face on the front of the handle lug though, dont want to mess with that part. just rubbed it with cotton shirt strips and buffing compond to get it out of the dull stage.
Didnt want to mess with headspacing sanding on that area.

still have a little more filling to do to a pit i see.

rest of them are filled and ready for some type of coating now.

need to scour inside of the reciever with brake parts cleaner also.

bore needs some attention seriously too. will be filling that up with kroil and letting it sit a couple days with periodical scrubbings.
