Been looking at a Ruger #1 and am curious what everyone's experience is with them for accuracy. Factory and handloads. I'd be handloading.

I have one, a 25-06.  I love the rifle, it shoots straight.  I know some need just a little work to get them to shoot straight.  Do a google search and you will get toms of info. Wish I could afford to get a few more of them.  Something to say about hunting with a single shot  :)

They're a "classy" gun.  Most seem to be very accurate with minimal work.  Being a little heavy and a single shot, would be the only two downfalls to me.

My dad's got 1 in 30-06. Some day I will step up to the next level away from the T/C's and into the #1's...they sure are good looking rifles, thats for sure.
I also am a huge fan of the single shots.

Heres a picture of mine with my sons first harvest.  As for being a single shot, it only takes one shot to put an animal down.

Very true, I just prefer to have 2 more readily available, with the ease of a bolt throw. :)

I've got one in .25-06 also. I haven't shot it in a couple years, but from what i remember it shoots 100 gr. NBT over a max load of I4350 really well. Mines got a bull barrel on it so its not real fun to carry, but its a lot of fun to shoot. I might try to kill a deer with it this fall if i can get over leaving the .243 at home.

Yeah I love them. I myself only have a couple. My dad has the majority of the collection :chuckle: I hunt with one chambered in .300 wby. I was only shooting Wby. factory Nosler Partitions. I then started reloading them. Not until last year I came up with a load using Nosler Accubonds. I'll never go back to Partitions. I'm getting under an inch group with 150 grain accubonds from my No. 1. I haven't chrono'd them yet but I know they are smokin. My dads user No. 1 is a 270 wby. No real custom work done on either. Some guys add some tuning deal, I don't remember what it is called. Its easy to float the barrel also to gain some accuracy. The trigger on my .300 breaks like glass so no issue there. Ive heard the falling block is one of the most accurate single shot designs. The rest of the #1's are pretty much collectors. I have another 270 wby with awesome wood I'll most likely never even put a scope on. Might just set it aside for a hunting rifle for my son someday unless I retire him my .300. My dad has a stainless lam 243, walnut blued .204, walnut blued custom .22lr and an Ed Brown custom .308. They've gotten a tad spendy over the last few years. Typically if we can find one with good wood for $600 or less we'll try to scoop it up. Missed out on some good deals over the last year too. Wastickslinger has a sweet red pad 22-250 he said he plans on giving me someday :chuckle: its a gem with nice wood on it. They are chunky though, you definitely feel them on the sling. I'd suggest if you are planning on getting one for hunting, don't get picky with the wood and if you do by chance get your hands on one with exceptional wood, I'd suggest passing on it or keeping it for a range gun or a safe queen :chuckle:

I had a #1 in .25-06 that I bought in 1980.  Beautiful gun, accurate.  I think the model was 1-V.  One of the guns I sold when I was building my house, and the only gun I'm really sorry I sold.

Nice gun. Not sure going from a T/C is a "Step Up" though. 'Depends' on both guns. I have had both. Like both.
Have seen guys throw a number of shots at a 'questionable' shot they should not have taken in the first place. A single shot anything will usually cure you of that. Most people I have met shooting a single shot are better shots as they have to make the first one count, and know where it will hit the first time. Single shots are fun.

You guys are getting me excited now.
As far as shooting a single shot goes: Hell, I never even work the bolt on my bolt guns when I shoot. Even when I  finally do , I put my other hand over the action to catch the shell so it doesn't hit the ground.
They're a great lookin gun but I was concerned about their accuracy. I like sub MOA groups. Some guns just won't do it even with the best hand loads. That was my main concern.
Are any of you guys handloading for your #1s and really working on tight shootin loads?

I have 2 Encores and my dad has a #1 and a Contender. I agree functionality wise I think it's a toss up. I think the #1's are "prettier" rifles. My Encores are shooters for sure, especially with a little tweeking.

That is a nice looking #1. Just out of the box might be a stretch though as that rifle may have had some work done to it and you might not even know. They quit making "red pad" #1's years back. You'll typically pay more for a red pad as they are sometimes more desirable to a collector. Any "new" out of the box #1 won't come with a red butt pad.

I have a funny story regarding a #1, a charging black bear and a guy wishing that #1 wasn't a single shot.
You can gifure the rest of the story out. Apparently it's difficult to get another boolit in the hole when there's a bear wanting to kick the krap out of you.

NICE! Yeah, it's getting tough to find a good No.1 anymore for less than $800. I scored on my .270 wby about three years ago. Actually bought it from a member here. I don't think I even made it home before he emailed me asking me if I ever decided to sell it to call him first. It was a good deal three years ago, a SMOKIN deal today. I think they quit making it in 270 wby. in 1990.

I built one into a LR rig in the late 70s.  It was a B in 300 Win Mag and doted on 200gr Sierra GKs.  Topped it with a 10x Lyman scope.  Loved that gun but sold it after I moved into big woods country.

My last #1 was  25-06. Nice shooter. Wish I still had it. I hand load everything. That said, one of the most accurate rifles I have owned is a 7X57 Mauser I have now. Crap stock, un-touched action with a HORRIBLE military trigger, un-touched ugly barrel. The first time I shot it I put a dozen rounds in a sub 1" at 100 yards with non-stop shooting. Bought it for the scope, but couldn't sell the rifle after that. I was using the 'Federal Premium' box ammo to boot. I still plan on putting a trigger in it at some point, but that is about it.
I like my T/C's for most things, but it is like any other gun, got to keep trying ammo until you find what makes 'em happy.

I like 'em. It's important to remember which pocket the extra cartridges are in...

Good looking rifles that handle well and are generally accurate, although some seem to need some tuning to bring out the best in them. I've had four over the years, down to just a .375 H&H now. Very pleasant shooting for such a big cartridge. Hammered a bear with it last fall.

I have a #1 in 220 swift, took a little work at the reloading bench to find a good load for it.Also had to float the forend, put on a Kiplinger trigger,a Vortex 6.5-20x50 and put the "secret" tuning screw to tune the barrel...now it shoots like a champ.Pushing 52 grain hornady bthp at 3800 fps and punching 5 shot 3/4" groups.NICE!Hated it at first cause it just would not shoot like I figured it would but after a little time and patience, wouldn't trade it for anything.

Would you explain the 'tuning screw' for us please.

I like the 1# rugers a lot, dont know if I would go after dangous game with one. I know for a fact I can rack the bolt and get a aimed shot at charging bear. Now reloading the single shot might be more of a challenge if that happended.

You bet..by a tuning screw I mean this......You drill a hole through the forend, near the back end in the center, use a hex head screw and a threaded insert.Turn the screw up into the insert until it makes contact with the barrel, now you have a tuning screw.By making slight tension adjustments you can in a sense "tune" the barrel my increasing or decreasing pressure and effecting the harmonics. It works for me and if not for the fact that my grandfather has been shooting #1's for an eternity, I would have had no idea about this.Hope that answered ur question.

Oops forgot to mention that you have to drill and tap the block that the barrel rests on underneath the back end of the forend

All this talk got me to thinking about them again. Then I ran into one in .357 mag. Hmmm. Push the chamber out for .357 MAX, toss my 14 power mil dot on it, and then,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Bellm is doing that with .357 mag Encore barrels currently...

Perty cool setup I bet.

I have a #1 in 25-06 that is only fairly accurate, it struggles to stay under 1.5" @ 100 yards.  Killed a LOT of critters with it over the last 30 years though.

I also have a #1 in 45-70 that is fantastically accurate.  Unlike the 25-06 it will shoot just about any bullet, cast or jacketed, at any velocity, accurately.  Even at .45 caliber, breaking 1 moa is no big deal.

I did not see the gun in person. It was on-line, but yes, it is a CHP gun. Here is the link:

http://www.gunsamerica.com/961212614/Guns/Rifles/Ruger-Rifles/1-Type/LNIB_1_A_Ruger_CHP_Ltd_Ed_357_Ma.htm

Kind of pricey for me at $1100 buy it now, but it would probably be a fun one.

The price is steep because it's a CHP gun.
