I have a funny story regarding a #1, a charging black bear and a guy wishing that #1 wasn't a single shot.
You can gifure the rest of the story out. Apparently it's difficult to get another boolit in the hole when there's a bear wanting to kick the krap out of you.
 

I always try to have a more positive outlook on life. Like, it would be better than trying to stuff a muzzleloader or knock another arrow.   If i had a bear charging me I would forget how to work a bolt action too.

It was made in the mid eighties,I am sure it has had some trigger work done plus the forarm has been bedded.

NICE! Yeah, it's getting tough to find a good No.1 anymore for less than $800. I scored on my .270 wby about three years ago. Actually bought it from a member here. I don't think I even made it home before he emailed me asking me if I ever decided to sell it to call him first. It was a good deal three years ago, a SMOKIN deal today. I think they quit making it in 270 wby. in 1990.

Id rather have my No.1 than one of those stinkin muzzleloaders anyday Tried that route last year...Not my cup of tea

I built one into a LR rig in the late 70s.  It was a B in 300 Win Mag and doted on 200gr Sierra GKs.  Topped it with a 10x Lyman scope.  Loved that gun but sold it after I moved into big woods country.

We have a #1 in a 308 with a manlicker stock. I love that gun its a strait shooter. I shot my first deer with it and so will my boy. And to add another thing Its one of the prettiest guns I have ever seen.

My last #1 was  25-06. Nice shooter. Wish I still had it. I hand load everything. That said, one of the most accurate rifles I have owned is a 7X57 Mauser I have now. Crap stock, un-touched action with a HORRIBLE military trigger, un-touched ugly barrel. The first time I shot it I put a dozen rounds in a sub 1" at 100 yards with non-stop shooting. Bought it for the scope, but couldn't sell the rifle after that. I was using the 'Federal Premium' box ammo to boot. I still plan on putting a trigger in it at some point, but that is about it.
I like my T/C's for most things, but it is like any other gun, got to keep trying ammo until you find what makes 'em happy.

Good looking rifles that handle well and are generally accurate, although some seem to need some tuning to bring out the best in them. I've had four over the years, down to just a .375 H&H now. Very pleasant shooting for such a big cartridge. Hammered a bear with it last fall.

I have a #1 in 220 swift,took a little work at the reloading bench to find a good load for it.Also had to float the forend,put on a Kiplinger trigger,a Vortex 6.5-20x50 and put the "secret" tuning screw to tune the barrel...now it shoots like a champ.Pushing 52 grain hornady bthp at 3800 fps and punching 5 shot 3/4" groups.NICE!Hated it at first cause it just would not shoot like I figured it would but after a little time and patience,wouldn't trade it for anything.

I like the 1# rugers a lot, dont know if I would go after dangous game with one. I know for a fact I can rack the bolt and get a aimed shot at charging bear. Now reloading the single shot might be more of a challenge if that happended.

You bet..by a tuning screw I mean this......You drill a hole through the forend,near the back end in the center,use a hex head screw and a threaded insert.Turn the screw up into the insert until it makes contact with the barrel,now you have a tuning screw.By making slight tension adjustments you can in a sense "tune" the barrel my increasing or decreasing pressure and effecting the harmonics.It works for me and if not for the fact that my grandfather has been shooting #1's for an eternity, I would have had no idea about this.Hope that answered ur question.

Oops forgot to mention that you have to drill and tap the block that the barrel rests on underneath the back end of the forend

Bellm is doing that with .357 mag Encore barrels currently...
