Got my first bow!!!
« on: March 01, 2011, 10:36:06 PM »
Well after looking around for awhile I went in to Wholesale Sports in Fed. Way with my buddy today to look at and shoot my first bow. I talked to the guys behind the counter and the suggested a couple bows which I took back and shot. I had never shot or even pulled back a bow before so I was really excited.

I really liked the Quest G5 they set me up with, after getting it set to my draw length and finding a release I really liked I decided to get it. We got the release set and fitted to my hand. The guys there were super helpful. The G5 came as a package with a Cobra 5 pin site, string silencers, a whisker biscuit rest, and detachable quiver. I ended up shooting the bow about 30 times in the back and really enjoyed it. 70lb draw weight with 80% let off. I got a Scott Mongoose Single Caliper release, 6 arrows and practice tips for shooting. Going to pick up some hay bales soon so I can start practicing even more.

I will get a stabilizer, case, and anything else I need after I practice a bit more and get more money!

Cell phone picture so it isn't the best. I couldn't be more excited!

Don't shoot through hay bales, you will just ruin your fletching. Get a good cube target. In the long run it will be less expensive. Start close and as you get more comfortable and accurate then move back. Have fun!

Welcome to the addiction man. I got into bow hunting a few years ago and what I love is that you can practice virtually anywhere and that unless you screw up your arrow or lose a bunch, it is free! I never took lessons or anything but they might not be a bad idea so that you don't start any bad habits. Wish I would have.  :twocents:

Lots of very good instructional shooting videos on youtube!

thanks for the advice on the hay bales.

i watched about 4 or 5 instructional videos on youtube this morning actually. i think a buddy and me are going to practice a bit more and then start going to skookum archers once or twice a month, maybe more depending on our schedules. i looked all over their website today and it seems like a great and fun place. any one on here go and shoot there regularly? im wanting to get tips and pointers on shooting techniques of all kinds so i can try them all out and see what works and feels best for me.

You're hooked now! Wait until you take your first elk with a bow. You'll feel like you've never felt before. Congrats on the nice setup, man.

Welcome to the fun and frustration of bow hunting, being able to hunt in different seasons all in the same year (ie" late summer, fall and winter), seeing lots of animals that are just out of range (if i had a gun i'd be done every year opening day), the thrill and excitment of having animals mere feet away, close enough you can smell them and hear them breath, it is an addiction like someone else said....
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

Your screwed now. You'll never be so frustrated in your life, then when that first kill comes you will never pick up a rifle again. Like the others said it's an addiction. We have a support group, seek help immediately. :archery_smiley:

Awesome, I too am getting into bow hunting this year.  I also bought my first bow and it should be here today, if Fedex squared their issues away.  I am a complete noob when it comes to archery, I have never even shot a bow before.  Thankfully my wife's grandfather is very experienced and he will be walking me through everything.

Not to hijack this thread but could anyone point me towards some good information on learning everything about archery? lol...I will be surfing a lot of youtube the next couple weeks!
