They're Gobbling!!!
« on: March 02, 2011, 09:06:13 AM »
Got a text message from my cousin this morning saying that the toms were being noisy this morning. Getting closer, better unpack the snow camo for the opener  :IBCOOL:

Calm down homes. They gobble in December too.   :chuckle: I have seen them strut and gobble in the dead of winter. All about the hens!!! I know its the next season and its right around the corner but they are not going to get hot in March.

I know. A guy can get a little excited can't he? I haven't turkey hunted since I took a kid hunting a couple years ago and called him in a big gobbling tom. Oh wait that wasn't a kid, that was cougeyes.  :chuckle:

Oh yes I remember that day.  Then we proceeded to get drunk in Pullman and try and catch the deep fryer on fire and then Joe cut my finger trying to butcher the turkey, fun times!  Gramps has 50 on is property consistently, may hunt them this spring.  We'll see.

Yeah, isn't that what a turkey does is gobble? I've never heard one screech like an eagle before! :chuckle:

I had a tom walk into my yard tonight :dunno:! He was very afraid of me but gobbled when I called to him (looks like a Rio from what I could see but it was getting dark quick). I do not know where he came from or if he is still around. I am guessing he came in to to listen to the chukar and pheasants I have. Still not something you see on the Kitsap peninsula very often. Hope he is here in the morning so the boy can call to him  :chuckle:.

Stepped out side this morning at 6 am. A inch of new snow and the gobblers really going off. One bird gobble and immediately a half dozen more sounded off.

Unfortunately every thing near me that has turkeys is posted. I did get permission to hunt one neighbors place 5 years ago. The wife and I each took a buck. Landowner turned us down the next year, as some neighbors gave him a hard time about letting us hunt.
This band of birds will move out once the snow melts, but for now fun to hear and lots of them.

Heard the frogs croaking last nite in the lowlands of the Wet Side.   The robins are fighting for territory.  The Indian Plum is leafing out.  The turkeys are starting up ........................................  What does this all mean?  :chuckle:

Moved to the wet side from Chewelah, I miss waking to the sound of spring. Turkeys gobbling every morning.

:yike: WHY! :bdid: I hope she , or the job was worth it  :chuckle:.

I know most of us love it on the east side (but we just get to visit) I can not imagine how it would feel to actually call it home and live over here. On the plus side you are only 350 miles away, if it was not for gas prices you could visit frequently. I have my dog in Chewelah right now doing some stud work, can't wait to get the call to come get him, I miss him a bunch but not the $300 fuel bill it will take to get him home :bash:. Most likely he will be staying there until the youth turkey season. I will take the two kids over for their first real turkey opportunity and bring him home then  :IBCOOL:.
