Very good point MD... The 453 of the Barnes 180 is pretty good still....

High Country, I've shot 5 bulls with the TSX or TTSX's and like you, have had text book performance. I am not a Bench Rest or Long Range Shooter, but at "normal" hunting distances (out to 350-400) I am getting very acceptable accurracy from my Barnes.

Have you shot "groups" with yours? How tight?

I am able to get around .5-6 on the right day. the sciroccos threw groups for me that made me look like a pro. accuracy with the rum seems to be its strong point. I would never take a less then perfect angle shot on a critter regardless of size with a berger or any cup core bullet from a rum. I would not even think twice with a barnes.

I think the "best" is a matter of opinion.  The 180 gr. Scirocco and 175 Berger VLD have preformed flawlessly for me.  However, coming out of the big RUM, I'm thinking the 190 or 210 VLD might be the "best".  I honestly haven't given Barnes nor the Accubond much of a chance, as I've had better results with the others with less effort.  I recently bought another 300RUM specifically for the 210 VLD for "winning the war with wind".  I think I'm going to like it.

I can verify that with the Berger 210 VLD.. you will win the war with the wind! With a nice prone shot out to 500 yards with even 20mph or so of cross wind, you can easily correct withabout 1 mil over and hit a 6" circle.. all other factors considering of course.

You got that right... a 180 or 200 Barnes out of a RUM will kill a bull from ANY ANGLE... as long as you know where to put it....

Not to argue, but a Berger won't?  I'd say that I might have some strong proof to back that up.

I figured the berger wouldn't be tough enough to get through at some tough angles... if you have proven otherwise.... Sweet! Good to know.

I will keep shooting my Barnes though, because I dont shoot too long of range and the BC isn't that big of deal at 80 yards!   :tung:

I would love to have shots at 80 yds!  Unfortunately that's never the case with the areas and seasons I'm hunting.  Maybe you could PM me a recipe for the 200 TSXs, as I'd love to try a few. ;)

Well, I dont shoot a RUM...just a Winny... so it wouldn't be applicable! I use the Hodgdon online loading database for ideas then go from there!

Yeah.... last 5 bulls I've shot have been under 100 yards...and about the same with most my buddies too! Deer can stretch me out a bit though!

Good Luck!

I have seen the effects of a berger that hit the humorous of an elk.....it was a bad experience for the shooter. The bull was killed a few days later with a broken leg and minor shrapnel stuck in the skin of the chest. I would never consider a shot angle with more them 6-8" of meat blocking the vitals if a berger was in my gun. They are devastating killers on broadside hits, but not ever gonna make an ass to tea kettle type kill.

If I wasn't looking for long range performance past 500 yards, I'd load 180gr TSX's

I really like the 180 Accubonds. They shoot great and work great. I have shot elk, deer, bear, and antelope with them.

If a big bull or buck steps out....or anything that I want to kill for that matter,  I will not hesitate to put the old Texas Heart shot on him.... and thats one reason I shoot Barnes... But...the "quartering to" shots can be just as tough... I want something that holds together.....

I shot a bull last year at 200 yards with a 300 RUM shooting 168 berger's square through the shoulders it broke both shoulder's and the spine thats plenty enough proof for me....

Thats all that matters...as long as you believe!

I just got off the phone with my dad and we were talking about bullets...his buddy shot a moose last year with a Berg and the moose dropped dead, but the bullet was in a zillion pieces... not what I like....  to each his own....
