.223 or 22-250?

I have 2 of each. Both calibers pretty much kill predators equally. I don't think a couple hundred fps makes that much difference. I've killed coyotes at 300 yards with both calibers and they were dead. Some guys will argue between the 2, but they get the job done.

The ammo for a .223 is cheaper, but they are so damn loud. I prefer the 22-250.

I voted .223 but that is only on the AR plat form. IF i had to have a bolt action it would be a 22-250

Any accurate bolt action rifle in 223 and a one in nine or one in eight twist rate can shoot heavier 223 cal bullets. This gives you the ability to buck the wind better at longer distances and packs more energy than lighter bullets going faster. Ammo is much more varied, available, and more cost effective in the 223. I like shooting the 65-75 grain 223 call bullets out of a fast twist rate rifle. 223 Rem, the king of varmint cartridges.

No, I am not kidding. That's not the reason I prefer the 22-250, but it is the main thing I don't like about the .223. I think they are both a good varmint round, but I prefer the 22-250.

I agree with some of the above posts, 223 in an ar, but if you're talking bolt gun the 22-250 is much better. I have both, but shoot the ar's a lot more.

Maybe it's the .233's that I have shot or been around. I have a 22-250 with a 24" barrel that is by far quieter than all the mini 14's and AR's at the range. They seem to be quite noticeably louder.

 I know that guns are loud, but some have a certain sharpness, or pitch that seems to be more annoying.

I went wit the 223, I have a single shot with a 24 inch bull barrel. It has a 2.5 x 10 power scope and we shoot it out to 600 yards all the time. A buddy of mine took it to Montana for prairie dogs and his longest kill was 375 yards. Both are great guns its all personal preference.

I have both, but I prefer the 22-250. I took it to Africa and it worked very well on smaller game. Especially on some of the longer shots with 5-15 mph full value wind. I killed several Springbok, Mt. Reebuk and other game with it effectively. Not a lot of damage to the meat, some acted like they were sick and then keeled over and others dropped on the spot. I shot this Mt. Reebuk at 389 yards with 5mph full value wind. Dead on the spot.

22-250 might reach out a bit further, .223 has a more abundant cheap ammo supply. Both get the job done well. If you reload, it is a toss up. I like 22 Hornet as well, but it is a bit shorter shooter then either of the others. Pretty quiet though. Sure you CAN reach out there with all of them, sort of like shooting 500 yards with a 45/70, Still has lots of energy, but a 15 foot arc, but flatter shooting is better for critters.

I have both. My .223 (AR platform) is used for prarie dogs, rabbits, home intruders But I use my .22-250 to do the real dirty work on those coyotes, especially on those long shots past 300 yards. IT PUTS EM' DOWN..

I chose the .223 because of the AR platform. It was probably a good decision for me because when my son's friends come over they go through a few hundred rounds faster than you can say "Bob's your uncle".

Multiple shots, beats "1-shot-600-yd.-kills" any day when hunting varmints. 

.223 has many better semi-auto guns available.

Funny thing though, I use a .223 Thompson Pro Hunter for Coyotes.

 :)Mini 14 and 'most' AR's have much shorter barrels than 24 inch, so they may be perceived to be 'louder' however I am certain if you had equal guns and a meter the 22-250 would be 'louder'. I like them both, I think the "range' one can shoot is over stated with either. No doubt the 250 is flatter!! If you have the proper twist the 223 can shoot 60-70-80grain,,  bigger bullets very well!
the real feild difference comes down to the shooter. If AR was my want I'd go 223, if bolt either will work good, I love 22-250's! Kill yotes real well I cannot choose I gotta have both.
