what is the best caliber for yotes/cats?
« on: March 07, 2011, 01:23:14 PM »
I'm in the market for a varmint gun and was wondering what is "THE BEST" for yotes/cat/etc...
I have a .270 but think that is to big, the smallest caliber rifle I have.
So thinking of 22.250 or 220swift?

Open for ideas/suggestions

nothing wrong with a 223. its cheap to shoot also. and cheap to reload if you do that. 243 also works well. depending on what bullet you use, a light bullet shouldent damage the hide to much. a 55 or 60gr varmit type bullet might not even make an exit hole. or you can shoot a heavier bullet and have the capability to shoot pretty far.

I think if you are going for an all around (read all ranges) you can't go wrong with the .22 cal things that go reeeeaaallllyyy fast.  I find that for me, with short ranges...a .250-3000 Savage is pretty good.

I use a .243. Father uses a 22-250, and Brother shoots a .223 and .22-250, depending on which gun he wants to take that day.

i also agree with jimmyhoffa. + if you were considering a 22-250 or 220 swift. i would say 22-250. it shoots the same bullets as the 220 just faster. or slower if you choose. just a little more versatility.

haha Big D. i have shot one with a 300wsm before :P 40 ft away right between the eyes. lol

If your decision is between the 22-250 and a 220 Swift I'd go with the 22-250, it is so close to the Swift that there is little difference, brass is easier to find in 22-250 and there is a lot better selection of rifles and loaded ammo in 22-250.  If your thinking going larger you might as well go with your 270.

204 Ruger gets my vote and the best part of shooting the 204 you get to see what your shooting at flop or explode in your scope.

22-250 between the 2 you listed. If you are maybe going to be hunting bigger cats, then I would look to the 25-06 or other 25cals's that are flat shooting and more then enough for the bigger critters.

I like the .223 due to cheap ammo.  However the 22.250 is almost as cheap; wallmart has those 45 grain winchesters for around 23.00 a box of 40.  A few boxes would last you for the entire year for yotes and cats...errr well let me qualify it would last ME..lol...some folks kill quite a few..
.243 is a great all around for predators and deer but more expensive to shoot.

Why not use a smaller grain bullet out of the .270
are you really planning on skinning out all of the yotes you get? plus think about all the trips you can make to the east side instead of buying another gun :twocents:

Call me old skool but ya aren't gonna eat a yote and a good taxidermist can fix most holes. So my response is the one ya have in your hand at the time ya see one.

 :yeah:

My nephew "upgraded" his varmint gun last fall from a 223 to a 270 shooting 110 gr bullets.

But I think I understand your question about wanting a new rifle.  ;)  Get a 22-250.   :chuckle:

Wow, thanks guys. GOod input

I am also thinking also of the .223 but if I go with one, the overwhelming vote is for the 22.250 so will find one and sight her in
I could use the 270 but have the urge to buy a new gun
